''Magic Hour'' is a 2013 studio album by American alternative rock band Luscious Jackson. It was the first studio album from the band in 14 years and their first after reforming from being broken up for a decade, coming back with this album being funded by PledgeMusic; it has received positive reviews from critics. Reception At '' The A. V. Club'', Chris Mincher gave this album a C– and praised the band for avoiding the temptation to sound too modern, but stating that the resulting work is "relatively simple, at times almost amateurish". Editors at AllMusic rated this album 4 out of 5 stars, with critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine writing that "the lower budget can't help but bring to mind the group's lo-fi beginnings" and the music also "recall the noir funk of 1992's '' In Search of Manny''" and he finished by stating that the "result is terrific, a record that builds upon the group's legacy and is easily the equal of anything the band did in the '90s". Luscious Jackson
Luscious Jackson is an alternative rock/rap-rock group formed in 1991. The band's name is a reference to former American basketball player Lucious Jackson. The original band consisted of Jill Cunniff (lead vocals, bass), Gabby Glaser (vocals, guitar), and Vivian Trimble (keyboards, vocals). Drummer Kate Schellenbach joined the band midway through the recording of their 1992 debut EP ''In Search of Manny''. Between 1993 and 2000, the band released one EP, three full-length LPs, and ten singles on the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label. Their biggest hit—and only ''Billboard (magazine), Billboard'' Billboard Hot 100, Hot 100 entry—was "Naked Eye (Luscious Jackson song), Naked Eye". Lara Meyerratken is an Australian multi-instrumentalist musician and composer who currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Meyerratken is most commonly associated with her longtime collaborator Ben Lee. Meyerratken is a notable session musician and songwriter. Artists she has performed or recorded with included Luscious Jackson, Crooked Fingers, Luna, Via Tania, Sneeze, Clem Snide and Nada Surf. Kate Schellenbach
Katherine A. Schellenbach (born January 5, 1966) is an American musician and television producer. She is the drummer of Luscious Jackson and was a founding drummer of Beastie Boys. Career Born in New York City, she played with Beastie Boys from 1981 to 1984, when she was fired from the band because she did not fit into their new dynamic as they transitioned from punk music to hip-hop. In their 2018 memoir, Ad-Rock expressed regret for firing Schellenbach, which he attributed to her not fitting with the "new tough-rapper-guy identity". Schellenbach then drummed for Luscious Jackson, which the Beastie Boys signed to their newly-formed Grand Royal label.
