Magherafelt (District Electoral Area)
Magherafelt is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Mid Ulster (district), Mid Ulster, Northern Ireland. The district elects five members to Mid Ulster District Council and contains the wards of Coolshinny, Glebe, Lissan, The Loup and Town Parks East. Magherafelt forms part of the Mid Ulster constituencies for the Mid Ulster (Assembly constituency), Northern Ireland Assembly and Mid Ulster (UK Parliament constituency), UK Parliament. It was created for the 1985 Magherafelt District Council election, 1985 local elections, replacing Magherafelt Area C which had existed since 1973. It was called Magherafelt Town until 2014, and originally contained five wards (Ballymaguigan, Knockclogrim, Lecumpter, Town Parks East and Town Parks West). For the 1993 Magherafelt District Council election, 1993 local elections it gained an additional ward, Glebe. Mid Ulster District Council
Mid Ulster District Council (; Ulster Scots dialects, Ulster-Scots: ''Mid Ulstèr Airts Cooncil'') is a local authority that was established on 1 April 2015. It replaced Cookstown District Council, Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and Magherafelt District Council. The first elections to the authority took place on 2014 Northern Ireland local elections, 22 May 2014 and it acted as a shadow authority, prior to the creation of the Mid Ulster District, Mid Ulster district on 1 April 2015. John Kelly (Sinn Féin Politician)
John Kelly (5 April 1936 – 6 September 2007) was an Irish republican politician in Northern Ireland. He joined the Irish Republican Army in the 1950s, and was a founder member and a leader of the Provisional Irish Republican Army in the early 1970s. Personal life John Kelly was born in Belfast, County Antrim, in 1936. Later in life he moved to Maghera, County Londonderry, where he lived until his death in 2007. He and his wife had a daughter. He was a dedicated member of local Gaelic Athletic Association club Watty Graham's Glen and a keen supporter of Gaelic games and the Irish language. IRA member Kelly joined the IRA in the early 1950s when he was 18 and took part in the Border Campaign of 1956–62, but was arrested in December 1956 and was imprisoned until 1963. He was a member of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association in 1967–69 which led on to sectarian riots in Belfast. William McCrea, Baron McCrea Of Magherafelt And Cookstown
Robert Thomas William McCrea, Baron McCrea of Magherafelt and Cookstown (born 6 August 1948) is a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) politician, Christian singer and retired Free Presbyterian minister from Northern Ireland. As a politician, he represented South Antrim and Mid Ulster as their Member of Parliament (MP), representing Mid Ulster from 1983 to 1997; then South Antrim between 2000 and 2001, and then again from 2005 to 2015. McCrea was also a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for Mid Ulster from 1998 to 2007, before moving to represent South Antrim in the Assembly from 2007 to 2010. Early life and education McCrea was the youngest of five children born to Robert Thomas (a farmer in Stewartstown, Northern Ireland) and Sarah Jayne in August 1948. Ulster Unionist Party
The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) is a Unionism in Ireland, unionist political party in Northern Ireland. The party was founded as the Ulster Unionist Council in 1905, emerging from the Irish Unionist Alliance in Ulster. Under Edward Carson, it led unionist opposition to the Irish Home Rule movement. Following the partition of Ireland, it was the Ruling party, governing party of Northern Ireland between 1921 and 1972. It was supported by most unionist voters throughout the conflict known as the Troubles, during which time it was often referred to as the Official Unionist Party (OUP). Under David Trimble, the party helped negotiate the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which ended the conflict.
