Margaret Hilbiber Baylis (1912December 10, 1997) was an American graphic designer, illustrator, and author of gardening books. Early life Margaret Hilbiber was born in Tacoma, Washington in 1912. At age 16 she was accepted as an architecture student at the University of Pennsylvania, one of three women in her cohort. Two years into her studies with the onset of the Great Depression, Maggie had to drop out of the program to support her family by working as an assistant advertising manager at a department store in Tacoma. Maggie Black Kettle (August 20, 1917 – September 14, 2011) was a Canadian community leader in the Siksika Nation. She taught traditional crafts, dance, and the Blackfoot language in Calgary. She was a storyteller, and appeared in film and television programs in her later years. Early life Black Kettle was born in the Siksika First Nations Reserve near Gleichen, Alberta. At age 7, she was enrolled at a Catholic boarding school in Cluny, where she was forbidden to speak Blackfoot, her only language as a child. Career Black Kettle was considered a matriarch and spiritual leader of the Siksika people. She attended community events, including local ceremonies, large North American powwows, and the Indian Village exhibition at the annual Calgary Stampede. Margaret Black (March 31, 1930 – May 11, 2015) was a ballet teacher who taught in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s. She coached dancers such as Martine Van Hamel, Kevin McKenzie, Natalia Makarova and Gelsey Kirkland. She developed a ballet technique based on anatomy. She stressed moving from a neutral spinal and pelvic alignment with weight evenly distributed throughout each foot. She amassed a large following of both ballet and modern dancers.
