Maggie Lee (skipjack)
The ''Maggie Lee'' is a Chesapeake Bay skipjack, built in 1903 at Pocomoke City, Maryland. She is a 51' long two-sail bateau, or "V"-bottomed deadrise type of centerboard sloop. She has a beam of 16', a depth of 3.8', and a net tonnage of 8 register tons. She is one of the 35 surviving traditional Chesapeake Bay skipjacks and a member of the last commercial sailing fleet in the United States. She is located at Denton, Caroline County, Maryland. Tilghman, Maryland
Tilghman Island is an island in the Chesapeake Bay. It is part of Talbot County, Maryland, United States. History Initially known as Great Choptank Island, the island became identified with a series of local families. It was owned by Matthew Tilghman's family from 1752 and has been known as Tilghman Island ever since. During the War of 1812 the island was briefly occupied by the British, who obtained provisions for their military forces. The community of Tilghman appeared in the 1840s. The Chesapeake Bay ( ) is the largest estuary in the United States. Skipjack (boat)
The skipjack is a traditional fishing boat used on the Chesapeake Bay for Fishing dredge, oyster dredging. It is a sailboat which succeeded the bugeye (boat), bugeye as the chief oystering boat on the bay, and it remains in service due to laws restricting the use of powerboats in the Maryland state oyster fishery. Design and construction The skipjack is sloop-rigged, with a sharply raked mast and extremely long boom (typically the same length as the deck of the boat). The mainsail is ordinarily triangular, though gaff rigged examples were built. The jib is self-tending and mounted on a bowsprit. This sail plan affords the power needed to pull the dredge, particularly in light winds, while at the same time minimizing the crew required to handle the boat. Denton is a town in Caroline County, Maryland, United States. Its population was 4,418 as of the 2010 United States Census, and it is the county seat of Caroline County. History Denton was established in 1781. It was first called Eden Town, for Sir Sir Robert Eden, 1st Baronet, of Maryland, Robert Eden, the last royal governor of Maryland, and over time, Eden Town was shortened to Denton.
