Magallanes Y La Antártica Chilena Region
The Magallanes Region (), officially the Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena Region () or Magallanes and the Chilean Antarctica Region in English, is one of Chile's 16 first order administrative divisions. It is the southernmost, largest, and second least populated region of Chile. It comprises four provinces: Última Esperanza, Magallanes, Tierra del Fuego, and Antártica Chilena. The region takes its name from the Strait of Magellan which runs through it, which was in turn named after Ferdinand Magellan, the leader of the European expedition that discovered it. Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes (), is a municipality in the province of Cavite, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 23,851 people, making it the least populated municipality in the province. The municipality is named after Ferdinand Magellan, who was known in Spanish as Fernando de Magallanes. History Magallanes began its history as a barrio called ''Panitan'', then a part of the municipality of Maragondon. Panitan was derived from the Tagalog word ''"panit"'', meaning "to remove the bark of a tree". Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 22,293 people. The Strait of Magellan (), also called the Straits of Magellan, is a navigable sea route in southern Chile separating mainland South America to the north and the Tierra del Fuego archipelago to the south. Considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the strait is approximately long and wide at its narrowest point. Magallanes station is an elevated Metro Rail Transit (MRT) station located on the MRT Line 3 (MRT-3) system in Makati. The station is named after barangay Magallanes of Makati, which in turn is named after Ferdinand Magellan. Magallanes Province () is one of four provinces in the southern Chilean region of Magallanes and Antártica Chilena. The provincial capital is the city of Punta Arenas. Geography and demography Its eastern portion is located along the northern shore of the Strait of Magellan while the western portion straddles the strait on either side of the strait's northwesterly stretch toward the Pacific Ocean. Chilean Corvette Magallanes (1873)
The corvette ''Magallanes'' was ordered by the Chilean government after the disastrous consequences of the War against Spain in 1864-1866 and the rising border conflict with the neighboring countries at the end of the 1870s. In the far southern region of Chile In 1874 she was ordered to travel to the Strait of Magellan to produce charts of the ''Angostura Inglesa'' in the Messier Channel, and of the Bahia Possession in the strait. In January 1876, during patrols off the far south of Chile and under the command of Juan José Latorre, the French ship ''Jeanne Amelie'' was seized off the coast of Rio Negro as they loaded guano without a Chilean license. Magallanes is a Chilean football club based in San Bernardo, Chile. They play in the Primera B de Chile, after being relegated from the Chilean Primera División in 2023. History The club was on October 27, 1897, with the name Atlético Escuela Normal F.C. In 1933 they became the first national champions of Chile.
