Maifadi is a peak on the border of South Africa and Lesotho. At a height of , it is the highest mountain in the nation of South Africa, but is lower than Thabana Ntlenyana, the highest peak in Lesotho which is, at , the highest point in Southern Africa. By the Himalayan definition of a mountain, being a summit with at least 7% topographic prominence relative to height, Maifadi is not in fact a mountain summit, but rather a subsidiary summit of Makheka in Lesotho. By this definition, Champagne Castle is the highest mountain summit in South Africa, although Maifadi is unquestionably the highest point in South Africa. Thabana Ntlenyana () is the highest mountain in southern Africa. It stands tall within the Maloti Mountains that crest Lesotho. The peak's name means "beautiful little mountain" in the Sesotho language, from ''thaba'' (mountain), the diminutive ''-na'', and ''ntlenyana'' (beautiful). Thabana Ntlenyana is ranked 11th in the world by topographic isolation. Geography Thabana Ntlenyana is situated on the Mohlesi ridge, north of the treacherous Sani Pass. Champagne Castle is a mountain in the central Drakensberg range, and is the second highest peak in South Africa. It contains a series of subsidiary peaks, amongst them, Cathkin Peak (3149 m), Sterkhorn (previously called Mount Memory), Monk's Cowl and Dragon's Back. Ryan "Hedgie" Nicholas Sandes (born 10 March 1982 in Cape Town) is a South African trail runner. In 2010 he became the first competitor to have won all four of the 4 Deserts races. Personal life Sandes attended the South African College Schools (S.A.C.S.) where he took part in cricket, rugby and water polo. He was awarded a BSc degree in Construction and later an Honours in Quantity Surveying at the University of Cape Town. In addition to trail running, he is an active mountain biker, paddler and surfer. Running career In 2008, Sandes won the Sahara Race and the Gobi March.
