Referred to as a "professional racist", Dixon wrote two best-selling novels, '' The Leopard's Spots: A Romance of the White Man's Burden—1865–1900'' (1902) and '' The Clansman: A Historical Romance of the Ku Klux Klan'' (1905), that romanticized Southern white supremacy, endorsed the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, opposed equal rights for black people, and glorified the Ku Klux Klan as heroic vigilantes. Film director D. W. Griffith adapted ''The Clansman'' for the screen in ''The Birth of a Nation'' (1915). The film inspired the creators of the 20th-century rebirth of the Klan. Early years Dixon was born in Shelby, North Carolina, the son of Thomas Jeremiah Frederick Dixon II and Amanda Elvira McAfee, daughter of a planter and slave-owner from York County, South Carolina. The Misleading Widow
''The Misleading Widow'' (1919) is a silent film comedy directed by John S. Robertson and starring Billie Burke. The film is based on the play ''Billeted'' by F. Tennyson Jesse and H. M. Harwood and was produced by Famous Players–Lasky and distributed by Paramount Pictures. As it is not known whether the film currently survives, it is likely that it, similar to most of Burke's silent films, is a lost film. Plot As summarized in an adaptation published in the September 1919 issue of ''Shadowlands'', Betty Taradine, who lives in a British village near an army base, was abandoned by her husband for her spendthrift ways. She reports that he is dead to obtain insurance money. Later, British officer Captain Peter Rymill is assigned to be billeted at her house, but he turns out to be her husband living under an assumed name. There are various romantic triangles involving other villagers, and the identity of the missing husband and existence of the marriage is revealed after a dinner ... The Lincoln Cycle
''The Lincoln Cycle'' is a 1917 American silent series of ten short films portraying the life of American president Abraham Lincoln. They were directed by John M. Stahl and starred Benjamin Chapin, a celebrated Lincoln impersonator, in the title role. All except two episodes survive in the Library of Congress archives. It was also released as ''The Son of Democracy''. Chapin had appeared as Lincoln for many years, and had set up his own production company with the intention of making a film based on his own 1906 play ''Lincoln''. Following the enormous commercial success of D. W. Griffith's ''The Birth of a Nation'', the potential of another play related to the American Civil War allowed Chapin to plan an ambitious epic series of films, rather than a single feature. He hired young filmmaker John Stahl to direct. It initially began shooting at studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey before shifting to Ridgefield Park. Location shooting took place around New Jersey, with some shots also t ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
