Madeline Ivalu
Madeline Piujuq Ivalu is a Canadian Inuit, Inuk filmmaker and actor from Igloolik, Nunavut. One of the cofounders of Arnait Video Productions, a women's video and filmmaking collective in Nunavut, she co-directed, co-wrote and starred in Arnait's first feature film production, ''Before Tomorrow (Le Jour avant le lendemain)''. She costarred in the film with her real-life grandson, Paul-Dylan Ivalu. Her codirector of the film was Marie-Hélène Cousineau, and both women cowrote the film with Susan Avingaq. She garnered three Genie Award nominations at the 30th Genie Awards, for Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Genie Award for Best Achievement in Direction, Best Achievement in Direction and Genie Award for Best Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay. Genie Award For Best Screenplay
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television presents one or more annual awards for the Best Screenplay for a Canadian film. Originally presented in 1968 as part of the Canadian Film Awards, from 1980 until 2012 the award continued as part of the Genie Awards ceremony. As of 2013, it is presented as part of the Canadian Screen Awards. In their present form, two awards are presented for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay, although historically this division was not always observed. Restless River
''Restless River'' () is a Canadian drama film, directed by Marie-Hélène Cousineau and Madeline Ivalu and released in 2019. An adaptation of Gabrielle Roy's 1970 novel ''Windflower (La rivière sans repos)'', the film stars Malaya Qaunirq Chapman as Elsa, a young Inuk woman in Kuujjuaq, Quebec in the 1940s who becomes a mother after being raped by an American soldier stationed at the town's military base, but whose resilience and strength carry her through her difficult circumstances. The film's cast also includes Magalie Lépine-Blondeau, Patrick Hivon, Mark Antony Krupa, Tobie Pelletier, Taqraliq Partridge, Nick Serino, Etua Snowball and Matthew York.
