Mary Magdalene (sometimes called Mary of Magdala, or simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine) was a woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to crucifixion of Jesus, his crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus, resurrection. The Maddalena lunatic asylum was a famous insane asylum, established in 1813The North American Medical and Surgical Journal, 1831, Page 36. in Aversa, near Naples, Italy. It was founded by Joachim Murat, and for a time led by the phrenologist Luigi Ferrarese. It was "a celebrated lunatic asylum,"Cook's tourist's handbook for southern Italy, Rome, and Sicily by Thomas Cook, 1905, Page 219 both for its size and grandeur and for being "one of the earliest to discard the old system of harsh restraint." The physical facilities of the asylum were described as follows: It was divided into three distinct parts. Jerzy Franciszek Kawalerowicz (19 January 1922 – 27 December 2007) was a Polish film director, screenwriter and politician, having been a member of Polish United Workers' Party from 1954 until its dissolution in 1990 and a deputy in Polish parliament since 1985 until 1989. Life and career Kawalerowicz was born in Hvizdets, Gwoździec, Poland, as one of the few Poles living in an ethnically-mixed Ukrainian and Jewish town. Jerzy Kawalerowicz was noted for his powerful, detail-oriented imagery and the depth of ideas in his films. ''Maddalena'' () is an opera in one act by the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, who also wrote the libretto based on a play of the same name by Magda Gustavovna Lieven-Orlov (under the pen name Baron Lieven). That play was in turn based on Oscar Wilde's play '' A Florentine Tragedy''. Origins Although Prokofiev had already written four operas (the earliest being '' The Giant'' which he composed at the age of eight and was written down by the composer's mother), ''Maddalena'' is the first of his works in this genre to which he gave an opus number (op. 13).
