Madalena is a Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish in the municipality (''concelho'') of Madalena (Azores), Madalena in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The population in 2011 was 2,581, in an area of 35.59 km². The parish of Madalena is the authority responsible for the administration and distribution of social services and economic programs in the local seat of the Madalena (Azores), municipality of the same name. It contains the localities Areia Larga, Barca, Cabo Branco, Madalena, Sete Cidades, Toledos and Valverde. Madalena () is a municipality along the western coast of the island of Pico, in the Portuguese Azores. It has 6,332 inhabitants as of 2021, in an area of 147.12 km2. The municipality is fronted by the stratovolcano Pico in the eastern frontier, and the Faial Channel which divides Pico from the island of Faial seven kilometers away. It is made up of six freguesias (civil parishes) and is encircled almost entirely by the Atlantic Ocean except in the east, where it is bordered by the two remaining municipalities on the island: Lajes do Pico to the southeast, and São Roque do Pico to the northeast. By conjecture, the primitive community was referred to as ''Madalena'' or ''Santa Maria Madalena'', and received its suffix from its location along the sea, in order to distinguish it from the parish and chapel of Santa Maria Madalena, in the parish of Porto Moniz (which was the centre of pilgrimages). Even today, the area is still referred to as ''Madalena'' by many of the locals. The parish had its origin in a small farm and houses, including chapel (whose patron was Santa Maria Madalena, but yet invoked to the name of Santa Catarina.

Maria Madalena Santos Reinbolt (September 14, 1912 – 1976) was a Brazilian self-taught painter and textile artist who created "paintings with paint" and "paintings with wool" that depicted rural scenes reminiscent of the artist's childhood in Bahia. She is considered to be a naïf or primitive artist. Early life Reinbolt was born one of 16 children in a farm in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, on September 14, 1912. Her father was a farmer and her mother, Ana Maria de Souza Pereira, was a farmhand and a craft worker that mainly occupied herself by threading cotton, creating pottery dishes and pots, fabricating lace, and making butter. Maddalena Casulana (c. 1544 – c. 1590) was an Italian composer, lutenist and singer of the late Renaissance. She is the first female composer to have had a whole book of her music printed and published in the history of western music, dedicated to her female patron Isabella de' Medici. Maria Madalena Brites Boavida is an East Timorese politician, a member of FRETILIN, and a former Minister of Planning and Finance in the National Parliament of East Timor. Biography Boavida comes from the present municipality of Ermera. Thanks to a scholarship in 1974, she was given the opportunity to study in Portugal. There she came into contact with students from the African colonies of Portugal and the local independence movements, after which she also supported the independence of Portuguese Timor. Etymology It takes its name from a chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, which was built in the area in 1490.
