Machuelo Abajo
Machuelo Abajo is one of the 31 barrios of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Along with Canas Urbano, Magueyes Urbano, Portugués Urbano, and San Antón, Machuelo Abajo is one of the municipality's five originally rural barrios that are now also part of the urban zone of the city of Ponce. It was founded in 1818. This list of barrios of Ponce consists of the 31 barrios in the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. With 31 barrios, Ponce is Puerto Rico's municipality with the largest number of barrios. Meaning of "barrio" In Puerto Rico, the term barrio has two very different meanings. Government, Officially, Ponce has 31 barrios; this is according to local, insular, and federal governments. Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez (September 30, 1946 – June 29, 1993), better known as Héctor Lavoe, was a Puerto Rican people, Puerto Rican salsa music, salsa singer. Widely regarded as one of salsa’s most important and influential vocalists, Lavoe played a pivotal role in popularizing the genre throughout the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. Marta Romero
Marta Romero (17 February 1928 – 31 May 2013) was a Puerto Rican actress and singer, and one of the pioneers in Puerto Rican television. Early life Romero was born on Calle Mora in downtown Ponce, a city in the south coast of Puerto Rico and was raised in Machuelo Abajo, then a rural neighborhood located on the road from Ponce to Juana Díaz. In 1940, when she was thirteen years old, she won the contest in a local radio station, ''Los aficionados de WPAB'', an amateur show for performers. That led to other radio shows in musical programs, such as ''Variedades musicales'' and also acting parts in soap operas and ''Cosas de amor'', among other programs broadcast through WPAB. In 1944, she became the lead female vocalist of the local Ponce orchestra Mingo & His Whoopie Kids and toured the Island. Pedro Albizu Campos (June 29, 1893Luis Fortuño Janeiro. ''Album Histórico de Ponce (1692–1963).'' p. 290. Ponce, Puerto Rico: Imprenta Fortuño. 1963. – April 21, 1965) was a Puerto Rican attorney and politician, and a leading figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement. He was the president and spokesperson of the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico from 1930 until his death. He led the nationalist revolts of October 1950 against the United States government in Puerto Rico. Albizu Campos spent a total of twenty-six years in prison at various times for his Puerto Rican independence activities. Mercedita International Airport (AIM) () is an international airport located three nautical miles (6 km) east of the central business district of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Sexto (''Barrio Sexto'') is one of the 31 barrios of the municipality of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Along with Primero, Segundo, Tercero, Cuarto, and Quinto, Sexto is one of the municipality's six core urban barrios. Barrio Sexto used to be called Barrio Cantera. It was organized in 1878.
