Maccabi Ironi Rehovot ( he, מכבי עירוני רחובות) is a professional basketball club based in Rehovot in central Israel. The team plays in the Liga Leumit. History Maccabi Rehovot was founded in 1950 and played in the Liga Artzit (the third-tier division). During the nineties, Rehovot was coached by Moti Aroesti, a former Maccabi Tel Aviv player, and played in the Liga Leumit. In the 2015–16 season, Rehovot was promoted to the Liga Leumit for the first time in 17 years. In the 2017–18 season, Rehovot reached the Liga Leumit Semifinals as the third seed but eventually lost to Maccabi Kiryat Gat. Liga Leumit (basketball)
Liga Leumit ( he, ליגה לאומית, lit. ''National League'') is the second tier level league of basketball competition in Israel. It is the league level that is below the first tier Israeli Premier League. League system The league contains 15 clubs that compete in a home-and-away round-robin. At the end of the season, the top eight clubs advance to the play-offs. The first round is played on a best-of-three basis. The four winning clubs advance to two best-of-five playoffs, the winners of which are promoted to the Super League. The two teams that finish at the bottom of the table are relegated to Liga Artzit. Moti Aroesti
Motti Aroesti (born 11 July 1954), is a retired Israeli professional basketball player and coach. Biography Motti Aroesti was born in Givatayim. Basketball career Aroesti played club basketball with Maccabi Tel Aviv, from 1973 to 1988. Aroesti wore the Maccabi jersey for 15 consecutive seasons, and won an Israeli League title for each of those years, as well as 11 Israeli State Cups. Aroesti helped Maccabi win its first FIBA Europe Champions Cup ( EuroLeague) title in the 1976–77 season, and he was still the team's starting point guard, when his team lifted its second top continental trophy in the 1980–81 season. The Israeli Basketball State Cup ( he, גביע המדינה בכדורסל) is the second most important professional basketball competition in Israel, after the Israeli Super League. It is the national federation cup of Israel. The tournament began in the 1955–56 season, and is run by the Israel Basketball Association. In the 21–22 season, the tournament format was changed so that only the first 8 teams at the end of the first rotation of the Israeli Basketball Premier League will compete.
