MacArthur Tunnel
The MacArthur Tunnel, formally known as the General Douglas MacArthur Tunnel, is a highway tunnel in San Francisco, California. It is located within the Presidio of San Francisco, now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The tunnel carries California State Route 1 under a large hill and under the Presidio Golf Course. It connects Park Presidio Boulevard (Hwy 1) in the Richmond District to US 101 on the Doyle Drive viaduct, and the Golden Gate Bridge. History When the Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, the approach for northbound traffic to Marin County was carried solely by Doyle Drive, from the east. Milton Marks
Milton Marks Jr. (July 22, 1920 – December 4, 1998) was an American politician who served in the California State Assembly and California State Senate, as both a Republican and a Democrat, representing San Francisco for 38 years. Early life Born in San Francisco, Marks attended the city's Alamo Grammar School and Galileo High School, where he participated in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps. After graduating from Galileo as valedictorian of the class of 1937, Marks went on to earn an A.B. from Stanford University in 1941, where he had been part of the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. The National Bridge Inventory (NBI) is a database, compiled by the Federal Highway Administration, with information on all bridges and tunnels in the United States that have roads passing above or below them. That is similar to the grade-crossing identifier number database, compiled by the Federal Railroad Administration, which identifies all railroad crossings. The bridge information includes the design of the bridge and the dimensions of the usable portion. The data is often used to analyze bridges and to judge their condition. Bartlett Dam
The Bartlett Dam is a concrete multiple-arch buttress dam on the Verde River, located 50 km northeast of Phoenix, Arizona. The dam creates Bartlett Lake and its primary purpose is irrigation water supply. It was the first dam constructed on the Verde River and the first of its type constructed by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. It was built between 1936 and 1939. It was named after Bill Bartlett, a government surveyor. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017. Mountain Lake Park
Mountain Lake Park is a park located in Richmond District on the West Side of San Francisco. Situated north of the intersection of Lake and Funston, the park was designed by engineer William Hammond Hall in the late 19th century (circa 1875). Hall also designed Golden Gate Park and was significantly influenced by Frederick Law Olmsted. History Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza ended his second northward expedition at the lake, stopping for two days in 1776. While here he located a site for the Spanish presidio that was later built. A plaque was placed in September 1957 near the point where he stayed. Fill taken from the cut to build the MacArthur Tunnel was dumped near Mountain Lake during the construction of the Funston Avenue approach to the Golden Gate Bridge in 1939. The Waldo Grade is a highway grade between the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin City along U.S. Route 101 and State Route 1. It is defined as the stretch of roadway between the Spencer Offramp and Marin City, within the city of Sausalito. This grade is traversed by a full freeway multi-lane highway facility. Paul Bernard Malone (May 8, 1872 – October 16, 1960) was a highly decorated officer in the United States Army with the rank of Major general (United States), major general. Following his graduation from the United States Military Academy (USMA), he participated in the Spanish–American War, Spanish–American and Philippine–American Wars and commanded an infantry brigade in the last year of the World War I.
