Mabel A. Shaw
Mabel A. Shaw (1880 – June 15, 1962) was noted as the person who held the record of gambling on horse races at Hollywood Park race track in California. She was called "America's No. 1 racing fan." Except for brief periods of illness, Mrs. Shaw did not miss a day's racing from the park's opening on June 10, 1938, nor did she fail to bet on a single race. When the grandstand burned down in 1949 and the management moved the track's operation to Santa Anita that year, she took an apartment close by to continue her attendance. For most of this time, she was the co-owner of the '' Inglewood Daily News''. It was calculated that she had wagered on 16,032 horses in placing 5,344 win-place-show bets through June 19, 1953 (668 days of racing). By the time she died on June 15, 1962, she had bet on 9,769 races. When she could not attend because of illness, she sent her wagers with a friend. Hollywood Park Racetrack
Hollywood Park was a thoroughbred horse racing, race course located in Inglewood, California, about 3 miles (5 km) from Los Angeles International Airport and adjacent to The Forum (Inglewood, California), the Forum indoor arena. In 1994, the original Hollywood Park Casino was added to the racetrack complex. Horse racing and training were shut down in December 2013 though the casino operations continued until the Hollywood Park Casino opened in October 2016. The track was demolished in stages from 2014 until 2016 and the area is now the site of a master-planned neighborhood in development named Hollywood Park, Inglewood, Hollywood Park after the former track. Seabiscuit (May 23, 1933 – May 17, 1947) was a champion thoroughbred racehorse in the United States who became the top money-winning racehorse up to the 1940s. Johnny Longden
John Eric "Johnny" Longden (February 14, 1907 – February 14, 2003) was an American Hall of Fame and National Champion jockey and a trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses who was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. His father emigrated to Canada in 1909, settling in Taber, Alberta. Career By 1912, Longden Sr. had saved enough money to send for his wife and young son to join him in Canada. However, the Longdens' train was late getting to the port of Southampton, and they missed their scheduled voyage to New York City on the '' Titanic''. A dead heat is a rare situation in various racing sports in which the performances of competitors are judged to be so close that no difference between them can be resolved. The result is declared a tie and the competitors are awarded a joint ranking. Dead heats can occur in both head-to-head races and competitions where competitors race sequentially and are ranked by finishing time. Photo finishes have been a long-standing method of resolving outcomes too ambiguous to be distinguished by the naked eye.
