Maasgouw
Maasgouw () is a municipality in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located on both banks of the river Meuse southwest of the city of Roermond. It was formed in a merger of the former municipalities of Heel, Maasbracht and Thorn on 1 January 2007. Linne
Linne is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Maasgouw, and lies about 6 km southwest of Roermond. History The village was first mentioned in 943 as Linne. The etymology is unclear. Linne developed in the Early Middle Ages along the Maas. It used to be part of Ambt Montfort. In 1716, it became part of the Dutch Republic. The Catholic St Martinus Church is a three aisled basilica-like church built in 1897 to replace the medieval church. The tower was blown up in 1945, and restored between 1950 and 1951. In 1993, it received a copy of its original crown after the 1992 earthquake. Linne was home to 621 people in 1840. In January 1945, Linne was liberated from German occupation within the scope of 'Operation Blackcock'. Linne was a separate municipality until 1991, when it was merged with Maasbracht. Panheel
Panheel is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Maasgouw, and lies about 9 km south-west of Roermond Roermond (; li, Remunj or ) is a city, municipality, and diocese in the Limburg province of the Netherlands. Maasbracht
Maasbracht (; li, Brach ) is a town in the southeastern Netherlands. It was a separate municipality until 1 January 2007, when it became a part of the new municipality of Maasgouw. History The village was first mentioned in 1265 as "de Bragth", and means "newly cultivated land near the river Maas. Maasbracht developed along the river Maas in the Early Middle Ages. In 1294, it became part of Ambt Montfort. In 1716, it became part of the Dutch Republic. The Catholic St Gertrudis Church is a long church with double transept. The tower was built in the 14th century. It was severely damaged in 1944, and a new church was built between 1948 and 1949. Maasbracht was home to 305 people in 1840. In 1934, the Juliana Canal was dug as a bypass for the unnavigable parts of the Maas. The canal transformed Maasbracht in a main harbour and it started to industrialise. Heel, Netherlands
Heel (; li, Hael) is a village and former municipality in the southeastern Netherlands. The village is located near the E25 motorway and the river Meuse. History In pre-Roman times, this was the location of the Gallic town of Catualium. In 1821, the municipality of Pol en Panheel, covering the village of Panheel and the hamlet Pol, merged with Heel to form a municipality called Heel en Panheel. In 1991, it was renamed simply Heel. Stevensweert
Stevensweert is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Maasgouw. It lies on the right bank of the river Meuse, which forms the border with Kessenich in Belgium. There was also a ferry to this village. History The village was first mentioned in 1221 as in Werde, and means "land near water dedicated to Saint Stephen". With Ohé en Laak, Stevensweert is situated on an island in the Meuse. The Spanish built a fortress in 1633 during the Eighty Years War, this is still apparent in the street plan of the town. Stevensweert once was part of the Duchy of Guelders. In 1702, it was conquered by the Dutch Republic. The Catholic St Stephanus is a cruciform church built in 1781 as a replacement of the 13th century church. Beegden
Beegden (; li, Bieëgdje ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Maasgouw, and is located about 6 km west of Roermond. Until 1991, Beegden was a separate municipality. During that year the village became part of the municipality of Heel en Panheel. In 2007 the municipality of Heel en Panheel, including Beegden, became part of the new municipality of Maasgouw. The town currently has about 1800 inhabitants. During the past few years tourism has developed in Beegden, the key attractions of the town are the church, the seventeenth-century house and the St. Lindert windmill. Wessem
Wessem is a small city in the Netherlands, in the province of Limburg. Wessem is a part of the municipality of Maasgouw. It received city rights around 1320. History First mentioned in 965 as Wisheim, which means "good settlement", it received city rights around 1320. Little is known about the early history. The name sounds Frankish and excavation show that it was inhabited in pre-Roman times. It was inhabited in that time by the Eburones, a Belgic tribe based on north-eastern Gaul in the 1st century BC. Julius Caesar described them as being of Germanic origin. They are believed to have lived between the rivers Meuse and Rhine. Ambiorix, an Eburonian chief, is known for having led a rebellion against the Romans in 54 BC. Thorn, Netherlands
Thorn (; li, Toear or ''Thoear'') is a village in the municipality of Maasgouw, in the Dutch province of Limburg. It lies on the rivers Meuse and Witbeek. It is known as 'the white village' for its white-washed brick houses in the centre of town. It used to be part of the Imperial Abbey of Thorn. History First, the region of Thorn was a swamp nearby the Roman road between Maastricht and Nijmegen. But the region had been drained and about 975, Bishop Ansfried of Utrecht founded a Benedictine nunnery. This monastery developed since the 12th century into a secular ''stift'' or convent. Margo Reuten
Margo Reuten (Maasbracht, abt. 1966) is a Dutch head chef, known for her cooking in the Michelin starred restaurant Da Vinci. From 2009 till 2018, she was the only female head chef in the Netherlands holding two Michelin stars. Reuten describes her cooking style as "classic French" and "loyal to the region". For her classic dishes she uses as much as possible locally sourced ingredients. Career Restaurant Da Vinci was opened in 1993. It carries one Michelin star since 1999 and two from 2009 till 2018. Before Reuten opened restaurant Da Vinci, she had already a lot of experience on high culinary level. She worked as sous chef in restaurant Der Bloasbalg, at that moment bestowed with a Michelin star. Guido Jozef Marie Geelen (born 5 May 1961 in Thorn, Netherlands) is a Dutch sculptor, furniture designer and ceramist, who lives and works in Tilburg.Biographical data at the Netherlands Institute for Art History. Life and work Geelen attended the Teachers' Academy in Tilburg from 1979 to 1983 and the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming Tilburg (ABV) from 1983 to 1985. Jan Cober
Jan Cober (born 1951) is a Dutch conductor and clarinet player. Life Jan Cober is the child of a musical family from the village of Thorn, Netherlands. He played the clarinet in the ''Royal Harmony of Thorn''. He studied conducting and the clarinet at the Conservatory of Maastricht and completed both studies with a ''Prix d'Excellence''. Between 1972 and 1977, he was the first clarinet of the ''Nederlandse omroeporkest'' (Dutch broadcast orchestra), and starting in 1977, he was the solo clarinet player at the ''Residentie Orkest'' in The Hague. He has worked with famous conductors Willem van Otterloo and Ferdinand Leitner. At an NOS broadcast course and competition for conductors led by Neeme Järvi, he entered the final rounds.
