Ma-Li Wong
Ma-Li Wong is an Australian researcher in the fields of psychiatry and pharmacogenomics, with a particular focus on major depression. She is head of the Pharmacogenomics Research Program in the Mind and Brain Theme at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, as well as Strategic Professor of Psychiatry at Flinders University. Born in Hong Kong, Wong was raised in Brazil. She lived in the United States for over 25 years, during which time she was trained in psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Yale University, among other places. Julio Licinio is an Australian American psychiatrist who is SUNY Distinguished Professor at State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He is simultaneously Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at Flinders University in Adelaide. Pharmacogenomics is the study of the role of the genome in drug response. Its name ('' pharmaco-'' + ''genomics'') reflects its combining of pharmacology and genomics. Pharmacogenomics analyzes how the genetic makeup of an individual affects their response to drugs. It deals with the influence of acquired and inherited genetic variation on drug response in patients by correlating DNA mutations (including single-nucleotide polymorphisms, copy number variations, and insertions/deletions) with pharmacokinetic (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination), pharmacodynamic (effects mediated through a drug's biological targets), and/or immunogenic endpoints.
