MV Straitsman (2005)
MV ''Condor Islander'' is a roll-on/roll-off ferry owned by Condor Ferries. History ''Condor Islander'' was built in the style of Van der Giessen de Noord's vessels, alongside her sister ship, Stena Vinga, known then as MS ''Hammerodde''. BornholmerFærgen ''Condor Islander'' entered service with Bornholmertrafikken in 2005 as MS ''Dueodde''. Alongside ''Hammerodde'', she operated routes linking Bornholm with the Danish mainland. StraitNZ In 2010, the vessel was sold and shortly entered service with StraitNZ and was renamed MV ''Straitsman'' in recognition of StraitNZ's first vessel, which was in service for 11 years from when the company first launched in 1992. Condor is the common name for two species of New World vultures, each in a monotypic genus. The name derives from the Quechua ''kuntur''. El Astillero (English: "The Shipyard") is a town and municipality in the province and autonomous community of Cantabria, northern Spain. It is near the provincial capital of Santander, and it is known for its shipyard, and for hosting of Spanish national Rowing Championships. Its location is geographically defined by the estuaries that surround it. MV Straitsman (1972)
The ''Straitsman'' was a Bass Strait 720-ton roll-on/roll-off ferry livestock carrier. Built by NQEA, Cairns for RH Houfe & Co, it was launched on 29 January 1972. It was built to operate between Melbourne, King Island and Stanley. After RH Houfe & Co ran into financial difficulties, in 1973 the ship was purchased by the Tasmanian Transport Commission. On 23 March 1974, it capsized and sank in the Yarra River, Melbourne while approaching its berth with its vehicle door partly open, with the loss of two crew members and many of her cargo of 2,000 sheep. The ferry was heading upstream at when a crew member opened the stern door without the knowledge of the captain on the bridge. Following salvage and repair, the vessel spent 15 years serving King Island, before being bought by Bluebridge, where it provided inter-island ferry services between the North and South Islands between 1992 and 2004. Condor Ferries is an operator of passenger and freight ferry services between The United Kingdom, Bailiwick of Guernsey, Bailiwick of Jersey and France.
