The Ripley & New Albany Railroad is a shortline railroad that runs from New Albany, Mississippi, New Albany to Falkner, Mississippi, and previously extended from Houston, Mississippi, to Middleton, Tennessee, along former Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad trackage. RNA interchanges with the BNSF Railway in New Albany, Mississippi. It primarily hauls lumber products and Oil-Dri. History The first rail link between New Albany and Ripley, Mississippi, Ripley was chartered by William Clark Falkner, Colonel William C. Falkner, great-grandfather of famous author William Faulkner, in 1871 as The Ripley Railroad. By 1874 the line had been expanded north to Middleton, Tennessee, Middleton and four years later the name changed to Ship Island, Ripley & Kentucky Railroad. In 1889, the railroad was sold to the Gulf & Chicago Railroad in foreclosure. Gulf, Mobile And Ohio Railroad
The Gulf, Mobile and Ohio was a Class I railroad in the central United States whose primary routes extended from Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, Louisiana, to St. Louis, Missouri, St. Louis and Kansas City, Missouri, as well as Chicago, Illinois. From its two parallel lines through eastern Mississippi, the GM&O also served Montgomery, Alabama, Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama, as well as Memphis, Tennessee. History The Gulf, Mobile and Northern Railroad was created as the reorganization of the New Orleans, Mobile and Chicago Railroad in 1917. Gulf And Mississippi Railroad
The Gulf and Mississippi Railroad was the first regional railroad in the United States upon its creation in 1985. With over of track in the states of Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama it was among the largest spin-off railroads in the post-Staggers Act era. MidSouth Rail acquired the entire G&M railroad in 1988, operating it as a separate entity, SouthRail. Kansas City Southern purchased MidSouth Rail in 1994 and most of the former G&M lines are still in service under KCS. Tanglefoot Trail
The Tanglefoot Trail is an asphalt-covered rail trail in northeastern Mississippi. Ranging in the right-of-way of the Ripley and New Albany Railroad, it is the longest rail-trail in the state. It runs through three counties (Chickasaw, Pontotoc, and Union) and is located within the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. History A portion (the Pontotoc to New Albany section) of the route's origin goes back to the Chippewa, who later called it the "King's Highway". The king in question was Ishtehotopah, the last king of the tribe, who, on June 9, 1838, led 129 followers from Pontotoc to Indian Territory. It was also used by explorers such as Hernando de Soto and Meriwether Lewis and was part of the original Natchez Trace. The section then became part of William Clark Falkner's Gulf and Ship Island Railroad (G&SI) in the late 1800s. The name Tanglefoot comes from a train engine. Pioneer Lines (formerly Pioneer Railcorp) was a holding company for a number of American short-line railroads. Other subsidiaries offered locomotive and freight car leasing to its own railroads and to third parties, and also freight car cleaning. Pioneer Lines also had interests in real estate and newsletter publishing. It was previously owned by BRX Transportation Holdings starting in 2019. The company, originally named Pioneer Railroad Company, was founded on January 30, 1986 by Guy L. Brenkman. The company raised the capital for its first acquisition through a self-underwritten public stock offering. It continued this method of raising capital for subsequent acquisitions. The Alabama and Florida Railway was a short-line railroad headquartered in Andalusia, Alabama. It was owned and operated by Pioneer Railcorp of Peoria, Illinois. It operated a former Louisville and Nashville Railroad branch line from Andalusia to Geneva, Alabama. The company abandoned the entire line in 2011.
