MTL Queens
Netball in Malawi is organized by the Netball Association of Malawi. National team The Malawi national netball team competes in international netball tournaments such as the Netball World Cup, the Commonwealth Games, the African Netball Championships, the Fast5 Netball World Series and the SPAR Diamond Challenge. Malawi's best performance at a major international tournament was a third place finish at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. Malawi has defeated New Zealand, Australia and England in international tournaments. As of 1 July 2020, they are sixth in the INF World Rankings. Competitions Malawi's three regions – Central Region, Southern Region and Northern Region – all have regional leagues. The top teams from the regions played in two national competitions, the Presidential Championship and the Champions League. Malawi National Netball Team
The Malawi national netball team, nicknamed "The Queens", represent Malawi in international netball competitions. History Malawi have played in six World Netball Championships, famously finishing fifth in 2007 World Netball Championships, 2007. In 2012 they competed in the 2012 Fast5 Netball World Series, Fast5 tournament in Auckland, where they have had several historic results including wins over Australian national netball team, Australia and England national netball team, England, and finished in 5th place, just narrowly missing out on the finals. This followed a draw against Australia in the 2010 World Netball Series, 2010 Edition. Blantyre
Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with a population of 800,264 . It is sometimes referred to as the commercial and industrial capital of Malawi as opposed to the political capital, Lilongwe. It is the capital of the country's Southern Region as well as the Blantyre District. History Blantyre was founded in 1876 through the missionary work of the Church of Scotland. It was named after Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, birthplace of the explorer David Livingstone. The site was chosen by Henry Henderson, who was joined there on 23 October 1876 by Dr T. T. Macklin and others. Dr Macklin took over the leadership of the mission and began the work of building; but it was not until 1878 that the first ordained minister, Rev. Melbourne Vixens is an netball in Australia, Australian professional netball team based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, Victoria. Since 2017 Suncorp Super Netball season, 2017 they have represented Netball Victoria in Suncorp Super Netball. Between 2008 ANZ Championship season, 2008 and 2016 ANZ Championship season, 2016, they played in the ANZ Championship. Mwai Kumwenda
Mwai Kumwenda (born 27 September 1989) is a Malawi netball international player. She represented Malawi at the 2010, 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2011 and 2015 Netball World Cups. Kumwenda was the top goal scorer at three successive major tournaments – the 2014 Commonwealth Games, the 2015 Netball World Cup and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. At the 2015 Netball World Cup she was also named player of the tournament. Kumwenda captained Malawi and was again tournament top scorer when they finished third at the 2016 Fast5 Netball World Series. At club level Kumwenda has played for Peninsula Waves in the Victorian Netball League, Victorian Fury in the Australian Netball League, Mainland Tactix in the ANZ Championship and for Melbourne Vixens in Suncorp Super Netball. Bingu Wa Mutharika
Bingu wa Mutharika (; born Brightson Webster Ryson Thom; 24 February 1934 – 5 April 2012) was a Malawian politician and economist who was President of Malawi from May 2004 until his death in April 2012. He was also President of the Democratic Progressive Party (Malawi), Democratic Progressive Party, which he founded in February 2005; it obtained a majority in Malawi's parliament in the 2009 Malawian general election, 2009 general election. During his two terms in office, he was noted for being the Chairperson of the African Union in 2010–2011, as well as for several domestic controversies. In 2009, he purchased a private presidential jet for $13.26 million. This was followed almost immediately by a nationwide fuel shortage, which was officially blamed on logistical problems but was more likely due to the hard currency shortage caused by the freezing of aid by the international community. The Malawi Broadcasting Corporation is a state-run radio and television company in Malawi. National Netball League (Malawi)
The National Netball League is a netball competition in Malawi, representing the highest level of play in the country. The league was originally due to launch in 2022, as a replacement for the Presidential National Cup. It was funded by a K40,000,000 sponsorship deal with the Salima Sugar Company. The first gameday was due to take place at the Griffin Saenda Sports Complex in Lilongwe, but it was postponed, as the venue had not yet been completed. The competition instead debuted in 2023, with the first event taking place in Salima. The tournament was suspended for several months due to a lack of funds, but following the receipt of additional money from Salima, it was completed in October, at the Don Bosco Netball Court in Lilongwe. 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series
The 2017 Fast5 Netball World Series was the 8th Fast5 Netball World Series. Australia hosted England, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand and South Africa in a series, played in October 2017, at Melbourne's Hisense Arena. With a team coached by Tracey Neville and captained by Ama Agbeze, England won the series for a second time. In the final they defeated Jamaica 34–29. 2014 Fast5 Netball World Series
The 2014 Fast5 Netball World Series was the 6th Fast5 Netball World Series. New Zealand hosted Australia, England, Jamaica, Malawi and South Africa in a series, played in November 2014, at Auckland's Vector Arena. With a team coached by Janine Southby and captained by Laura Langman, New Zealand won the series for the third time in a row with a 35–31 win over Australia in the final. England finished third after defeating Jamaica 31–30 in a play-off. The series was broadcast live on Fox Sports in Australia, on Sky Sport in New Zealand and on SuperSport (South Africa).
