MOBO Awards 2023
After a fallow year in 2023, due to the organisers moving the ceremony to coincide with the early-year awards season that features the Grammys and the Brit Awards, the 26th MOBO Awards were held on 7 February 2024 at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. The 26th annual awards recognised achievements in "Music Of Black Origin" during 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023. The ceremony was hosted by former '' Love Island'' star Indiyah Polack and actor Babatunde Aléshé. It was live-streamed through YouTube, with highlights shown by the BBC two days later. The nominees were announced on 14 December 2023. In addition to the two existing honorary awards, Paving the Way and Lifetime Achievement, two additional awards were announced: Mobo Impact and Mobo Pioneer. The Outstanding Contribution Award was not bestowed in this year. Performers Headline acts consisting of Soul II Soul, Byron Messia and DJ Spoony were announced on 19 January 2024. Sheffield Arena
Sheffield Arena, known for sponsorship purposes as Utilita Arena Sheffield, is a multi-purpose arena located in Sheffield, England. It is situated near Meadowhall Centre, Meadowhall and lies between Sheffield city centre and Rotherham town centre. Opened in 1991, it is used for concerts and sporting events, and is also home to the Sheffield Steelers ice hockey club. Attendance for all events at the venue has totalled around 14 million since its opening. It has a maximum capacity of 13,600. DJ Spoony
John St John Joseph (born 25 June 1970), also known as Johnathan Joseph and professionally as DJ Spoony, is a British DJ, radio and television presenter. He is a member of the UK garage production trio, the Dreem Teem. Spoony also presents his BBC Radio 2 show ''The Good Groove''. Early career Joseph was born in Hackney, East London to British West Indian parents. As Spoony, his career started on London Underground (a leading pirate radio station in the mid-nineties), forming the trio the Dreem Teem with Mikee B (of Top Buzz) and Timmi Magic. With the Dreem Teem, he joined Kiss 100 in December 1997, followed by bringing UK garage nationally to BBC Radio 1 in January 2000. They went on to win a Sony Award in their first year. "Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written by the American musician Prince for his band the Family. It first appeared on their only album, '' The Family'' (1985). Its lyrics express the feelings of longing expressed by an abandoned lover. The Irish singer-songwriter Sinéad O'Connor recorded a version for her second studio album, '' I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'' (1990), co-produced with Nellee Hooper. "Why?" is the debut single by British girl group Mis-Teeq. It was written by Alan Glass, David Brant, Ronald St. Louis, and Maryann Morgan and produced by Brant for Vybrant Music. Originally a midtempo R&B track, it was remixed into an uptempo UK garage remix by Matt "Jam" Lamont and DJ Face. "Sorry (I Didn't Know)" is a song by UK garage duo Monsta Boy featuring Denzie on vocals. It was first released in 1999 on white label, then officially released as a single the following year via Locked On Records and XL Recordings. The song reached number 25 on the UK Singles Chart, and number one on the UK Dance Singles Chart in October 2000. 21 Seconds
"21 Seconds" is a song by UK garage group So Solid Crew. Released as the second single from their 2001 debut album '' They Don't Know'', it was the first of five consecutive top-20 hit singles for the group. Composition and production The song uses fairly stripped back production, utilising a 2-step rhythm which was common in UK garage at the time. Lisa Maffia's young daughter, Chelsea, can be heard at the beginning of the track, saying "Ha, ha, ha, whatcha laughin at?" The song title alludes to the approximate 21 seconds that each of the band members is given to perform their rap. 21 seconds is arrived at as the song's tempo is approximately 140BPM, has a key of G minor, and each rapper has 12 bars of 4 beats (48 beats at 140BPM, when worked out to the nearest integer, rounds to 21 seconds). So Solid Crew
So Solid Crew are a British UK garage and hip hop collective originating from Battersea, London, which achieved wide success in the early 2000s. The group consisted of many members, the most notable being Asher D (Ashley Walters), Lisa Maffia, Harvey and Romeo. So Solid have been credited for being pioneers in the UK music scene. By turning UK garage from a dancey-genre to one that was darker and more MC-oriented, and gaining mainstream success, they inspired London youth to experiment with their own darker sounds, leading to what would become known as grime music. Da Click were a UK garage group which consisted of DJ/producer Pied Piper (Eugene Nwohia), emcees Creed (Christopher Reid), PSG (Paul Gabriel) and Unknown MC (Ronnie Nwohia), and singer Valerie M (Valerie Malcolm).
