MIT Monarch-B
The ''Monarch B'' was a human-powered aircraft, designed and built by graduates and undergraduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and won the £20,000 first prize for the Kremer World Speed Competition. It is a successor to the ''Monarch A'' HPA which preceded it. Development The original ''Monarch'' HPA had been damaged in a nose-over landing on September 23, 1983. Over the winter of 1983/84, aspects of the craft were redesigned and rebuilt, in order to improve its performance. Work on these alterations commenced in December 1983, and were completed by early April 1984. Modifications made included a new, redesigned, fuselage, with the pilot being seated in a recumbent position. The fuselage had a lower, longer profile than its predecessor had, with its trailing edge having a distinct chevron profile. Human-powered Aircraft
A human-powered aircraft (HPA) is an aircraft belonging to the class of vehicles known as human-powered transport. As its name suggests, HPAs have the pilot not only steer, but power the aircraft (usually propeller-driven) by means of a system similar to a bicycle or tricycle: a pair of pedals, moved by the pilot's feet that turns a gear, which then moves a bicycle chain, which then rotates a smaller gear, which turns a vertical shaft that either turns a set of bevel gears, which turns another, horizontal shaft that ultimately turns a propeller, or in the case of earlier prototypes, an ornithopter mechanism. Often, a hybrid system is used; where during a certain amount of time pedaling, it would charge a battery, which would, at the push of a button, power an electric motor that is connected to the same horizontal shaft as the propeller. A monoplane is a fixed-wing aircraft configuration with a single mainplane, in contrast to a biplane or other types of multiplanes, which have multiple wings. A monoplane has inherently the highest efficiency and lowest drag of any wing configuration and is the simplest to build. MIT Chrysalis
The ''Chrysalis'' was a human-powered biplane, designed and built by graduates and undergraduates of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with Professor Eugene Larabee acting as Project Adviser. MIT had previously built two HPAs, the ''BURD'' and ''BURD II'', both of which were unsuccessful. Design work began in late 1978, with a 1/8th scale flying model being built to verify aspects of the design. The ''Chrysalis'' was a biplane of conventional configuration, fitted with a tractor propeller. The MacCready ''Gossamer Condor'' was the first human-powered aircraft capable of controlled and sustained flight; as such, it won the Kremer prize in 1977.
