MGWR Class K
The MGWR Class K was a Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) designed by Martin Atock for passenger work and introduced from 1893. They replaced earlier MGWR Class D locomotives that carried the same namesand numbers. The class was also known as the Great Southern Railways (GSR) 650 G2 class. Locomotives Design and historical development The design was a progression of the MGWR Class D standard passenger locomotive and resulted in a design more powerful than the MGWR Class D-bogie 4-4-0. They were rebuilt with superheated boilers from 1918 increasing their power still further and becoming one of the few if not only superheated 2-4-0 classes in the world. Broadstone Railway Works
Broadstone railway works or simply Broadstone or the Broadstone was the headquarters for mechanical engineering and rolling stock maintenance for Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR). The complex grew around the Dublin Broadstone railway terminus. History The first railway construction on the site was by J.S. Dawson, later to become Rogerson, Dawson an Russell. Two first class coaches are noted as ordered from the firm in 1839 by the Eastern Counties Railway of England at a cost of £420 each. The firms workshops were later purchased and incorporated in Broadstone Works in 1851. From basic beginnings around the Dublin terminus serving the basic of the newly created railway in the late 1840s the works had grown and become cramped by 1869/70. Midland Great Western Railway
The Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) was the third largest Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. It was incorporated in 1845 and absorbed into the Great Southern Railways in 1924. At its peak the MGWR had a network of , making it Ireland's third largest network after the Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) and the Great Northern Railway of Ireland. The MGWR served part of Leinster, County Cavan in Ulster and much of Connacht. Its network was entirely within what in 1922 became the Irish Free State. The Great Southern Railways Company (often Great Southern Railways, or GSR) was an Irish company that from 1925 until 1945 owned and operated all railways that lay wholly within the Irish Free State (the present-day Republic of Ireland). Martin Atock, also formerly known as Martin Attock, was an English railway engineer, who is best known as the Locomotive Superintendent of the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) from 1872 to 1900. Life Atock was born in June 1834 in Preston, Lancashire to George and Hephzibah Attock. His baptism took place in the parish church of St. John the Evangelist± on 26 June 1834 where the Reverend Roger Carus Wilson recorded his name as ''Martin Atock'' using the common spelling of the surname for the locality rather than that of his father. He moved to Stratford, London when his father George (Atock) Attock became Carriage and Wagon Superintendent of the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR), a predecessor of the Great Eastern Railway. He followed father into railway engineering becoming a draftsman. MGWR Class D
The MGWR Class D were steam locomotives built in batches from 1873 to 1887 for the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) of Ireland to a Martin Atock design. Numbering 39 at their peak they were the standard MGWR passenger locomotive of their era. Six of the class were rebuilt as . The first batch of 12 were built by Neilson and Company of Glasgow in 1873 and a further batch of 5 by Dübs and Company of Glasgow in 1876. MGWR Class D-bogie
The MGWR Class D-bogie were first 4-4-0 operated by the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) of Ireland. They were rebuilt from MGWR Class D 2-4-0 locomotives in 1900/01 with the intention to use them on the Dublin to Sligo mainline but they proved underpowered for this work and were allocated to more suitable work around County Mayo, including Achill. This led to their nicknames of ''Mayo Bogies'' or ''Achill Bogies''. Following the merger of the MGWR into Great Southern Railways (GSR) they also became designated class 530 or D16.
