MEK Compound
Camp Fallujah (formerly known as the MEK (''Mujahedin-E Khalq'') Compound) is a large compound in Fallujah, Iraq formerly used by the United States Army, U.S. Army and United States Marine Corps, U.S. Marines from 2004 to 2009 and now used by the Iraqi Ground Forces. History Before the Marine occupation, the Iranian dissident group called People's Mujahedin of Iran, Mujahideen-e-Khalq used the MEK as a training camp, but turned it over to the U.S. Army 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment on May 11, 2003 after the People's Mujahedin of Iran#Post-war, Mujahideen-e-Khalq surrender. 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment
The 3rd Cavalry Regiment, formerly 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment ("Brave Rifles") is a regiment of the United States Army currently stationed at Fort Cavazos, Texas. The regiment has a history in the United States Army that dates back to 19 May 1846, when it was constituted in the Regular Army as the Regiment of Mounted Riflemen at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. This unit was reorganized at the start of the American Civil War as the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Regiment on 3 August 1861. The United States Department of Defense continues to have a large number of temporary military bases in Iraq, most a type of forward operating base (FOB). Depending on their size or utility, the installations were called: camp, forward operating bases (FOBs), contingency operating bases (COBs), contingency operating sites (COSs), combat outposts (COPs), patrol base (PBs), logistic based (log bases), fire bases (FBs), convoy support centers (CSCs), logistic support areas (LSAs), and joint security stations (JSSs). A forward operating base (FOB) is any secured forward operational level military position, commonly a military base, that is used to support strategic goals and tactical objectives. A FOB may contain an airbase, hospital, machine shop, and other logistical facilities. The base may be used for an extended period of time. FOBs are traditionally supported by main operating bases that are required to provide backup support to them. A FOB also improves reaction time to local areas as opposed to having all troops on the main operating base. Camp Baharia, also known as Dreamland or FOB Volturno, was a U.S. military installation that was just outside the city of Fallujah, Iraq. It was the smaller of two major U.S. military bases maintained just outside the Fallujah city limits, during the Iraq War. Etymology Camp Baharia was often referred to by U.S. soldiers by its original nickname, "Dreamland".
