The M37 is a metropolitan route in Greater Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects the N3 at Greenstone Shopping Mall with Katlehong via Edenvale and Germiston. Route The M37 begins at Longmeadow Business Estate west of Modderfontein as an off-ramp of the N3 highway ( Johannesburg Eastern Bypass). It begins by going southwards to meet the R25 road (Modderfontein Road) and bypass the Greenstone Shopping Centre west of Greenstone Hill. It continues southwards as Lungile Mtshali Road (formerly Van Riebeeck Road and Edenvale Road), to enter the town of Edenvale and bypass the town centre as Andries Pretorius Road before becoming 17th Avenue. Crossing Horwood Street ( M16), the route becomes Hurlyvale Avenue then St. John Avenue before it t-junctions with Lungile Mtshali Road again, and turns south. Modderfontein (East Rand)
Modderfontein is a small town on the East Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. It began as a mining town adjacent to the Mud River, hence its name which is Afrikaans for "mud spring" or "fountain". It is located in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, adjacent to Kempton Park in the neighbouring City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. Flag The flag of Modderfontein comprised the shield from the municipal arms being placed in the centre of a white field. The shield can be described as a white saltire on a blue background superimposed in the middle of which are crossed hammers in black. The N12 is a national route (South Africa), national route in South Africa which runs from George, Western Cape, George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Northern Cape, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to Witbank, eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 (South Africa), N1 route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters, Northern Cape, Three Sisters was known as the N13. The R554 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa. The road connects the southern suburbs of Soweto with Springs on the East Rand via Lenasia, Alberton and Brakpan. Route Its western terminus is an interchange with the M68 and the N12 Moroka Bypass, just south of Soweto (south of Protea Glen), as Abu Baker Asvat Drive. The route runs south to Lenasia and then turns east in the town centre. It intersects with the R553 and passes over the N1 adjacent to the Olifantsvlei Nature Reserve east of Lenasia. The N17 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Johannesburg to Oshoek ( Ngwenya) on the border with Eswatini. It passes through Springs, Bethal and Ermelo. Background The section of the N17 from Johannesburg to Springs is a dual carriageway and is a national toll route. It was the first urban toll road in Gauteng. It runs from the M11 Wemmer Pan Road in Johannesburg to Tonk Meter Road in Springs. The first part of the N17 used to be the old R77 which ran from the M46 Rand Airport Road to the R23. As part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme, two slip roads have been made linking the N17 to the N12. Rand Airport
Rand Airport is an airport in Germiston, South Africa. It was constructed in the 1920s as the main airport for Johannesburg, but the city outgrew it and replaced the airport with Palmietfontein Airport in 1948 (itself replaced by Jan Smuts International Airport in 1952). History Before World War II In 1917, Major Allister Miller landed on Germiston Golf Course and thought the area close by would be suitable as an airfield due to its location near to Johannesburg, the landmark of Victoria Lake and the well-drained land. But it would take until February 1929, for the three interested parties to agree for of land to be set aside for what was called the Germiston Public Aerodrome. The M53 is a short metropolitan route in Greater Johannesburg, South Africa. It connects Germiston (capital of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality) with Vosloorus via Elsburg. Route The M53 begins in the Primrose suburb of Germiston, at a junction with the M14 route (Cydonia Road; Gorst Avenue). It begins by going southwards as Johan Rissik Road to reach a junction with the R29 route (Main Reef Road). It continues southwards to reach a junction with the M37 route (also named Johan Rissik Road), where it enters the Germiston City Centre. The M57 is a major metropolitan route in Greater Johannesburg, South Africa. A north/south route, it connects Germiston with the south-eastern suburbs of Pretoria via Kempton Park and Olifantsfontein. For most of its length, it is an alternative route to the R21 freeway. Route The M57 begins at a 4-way-junction with the R29 and M37 in Primrose (north of Germiston City Centre). It starts by heading east-north-east as Pretoria Road and meets the M39 (Lazarus Mawela Road) before crossing the N12 highway (Johannesburg-Witbank Highway) as Ntemi Ncwane Road (formerly Kraft Road). The R29 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Johannesburg with Leandra and Kinross via Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni and Springs. For much of its route it is named Main Reef Road. The R29 used to end near the Golela border post with Eswatini, however the section from Evander to Ermelo is now part of the N17 (prior to construction of the N17 extension from Leandra to Evander, the N17 followed the alignment of R29 from Leandra; however, the extension of the N17 highway has resulted in the old section of the road being given to R29) and the section from Ermelo to the Golela border post just after Pongola is now part of the N2.
