''M-16'' is the tenth studio album by German thrash metal band Sodom, released on 22 October 2001 by Steamhammer Records. The album is a concept album about the Vietnam War and is named after the rifle used by many U.S. soldiers during the war. Track listing The digipak edition contains two tracks taken from the 1982 ''Witching Metal'' demo recording. The intro sample in "Napalm in the Morning" is taken from the film ''Apocalypse Now''. The sample in "Marines" is taken from ''Full Metal Jacket'' as is the inspiration to record a cover of "Surfin' Bird" which also appeared in the film. Sodom (band)
Sodom is a German thrash metal band from Gelsenkirchen, formed in 1982. They have gone through many lineup changes, with bassist/vocalist Tom Angelripper the only constant member. The band is currently composed of Angelripper, guitarists Frank Blackfire, Frank "Blackfire" Gosdzik (who was a member of Sodom from 1987 to 1989 and rejoined in 2018) and Yorck Segatz, and drummer Toni Merkel. Sodom has been referred to as one of the "Big Four" of Teutonic thrash metal, along with Kreator, Destruction (band), Destruction and Tankard (band), Tankard. Sodom heavily influenced the German black metal scene, and is regarded as a pioneer of death metal. Surfin' Bird
"Surfin' Bird" is a song performed by American surf rock band the Trashmen, containing the repetitive lyric "the bird is the word". It has been covered many times. The song is a combination of two R&B hits by the Rivingtons: "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" and "The Bird's the Word". The song was released as a single in 1963 and reached No. 4 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The Trashmen also recorded an album named after the track, released two months later. History The Rivingtons followed up their 1962 ''Billboard'' Hot 100 hit "Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow" with the similar "The Bird's the Word" in 1963. The Trashmen had not heard this version, but saw a band called the Sorensen Brothers playing it and decided to play the song that night at their own gig. Thomas Such (born 19 February 1963), known professionally as Tom Angelripper, is a German musician. He is the lead vocalist, bassist, main songwriter and only original remaining member of the thrash metal band Sodom (band), Sodom and also a member of the bass guitar-focused side project Bassinvaders. He has also released solo albums under the name Onkel Tom. Biography Thomas Such was born in Gelsenkirchen on 19 February 1963, from where he learned to play bass steadily whilst working in coal mines. He then went on, as Tom Angelripper, to be one of the founding members of the German thrash metal band Sodom.
