Lingnan
Lingnan (; ) is a geographic area referring to the lands in the south of the Nanling Mountains. The region covers the modern China, Chinese subdivisions of Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Hong Kong & Macau and Northern Vietnam. Background The area was inhabited by the Baiyue and was the base of the ancient kingdom of Nanyue. At that time, Lingnan was considered by the ancient Chinese court to be a tropical barbarian land that had no contact with the Zhongyuan, which was the cultural cradle of Chinese culture. The ''Truyền kỳ mạn lục'' (傳奇漫錄, "Casual Records of Transmitted Strange Tales") is a 16th-century Vietnam, Vietnamese historical text, in part a collection of legends, by Nguyễn Dữ (阮嶼) composed in Classical Chinese. The collection was translated into French by UNESCO in 1962. Nguyễn Thế Nghi (阮世儀) translated this work into Vietnamese. His work is called Tân biên truyền kỳ mạn lục (新編傳奇漫錄). Northern Vietnam or '' Tonkin'' () is one of three geographical regions in Vietnam. ''Việt Điện U Linh Tập'' ( vi-hantu, 粵甸幽靈集 or 越甸幽靈集 ) is a collection of Vietnamese history written in chữ Nho compiled by Lý Tế Xuyên in 1329. The English "Viet Realm" (or "Yue Territory") derives from alternative Chinese characters designating Vietnam under the Chinese domination as Jiaozhi. Chinese sources tend to use the Chinese title Yuedian (粵甸, Yue as in Nanyue) whereas Vietnamese sources tend to use the title Việt Điện (越甸). The use differs in selection of different chữ Hán characters for Viet/Yue.
