Herford (district)
Herford () is a ''Kreis'' (district) in the northeastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring districts are Minden-Lübbecke, Lippe, the urban district of Bielefeld, and the districts Gütersloh and Osnabrück. History The region is also known as ''Wittekind's land'', as the last fights of Wittekind's Saxon tribes against Charlemagne took place here. He is believed to be buried in the town of Enger. When the area became part of the Prussian province Westphalia, the first district Herford was created in 1816. In 1832 it was merged with the district Bünde. In 1911, the city of Herford left the district; however, it lost its status as an independent urban district in 1969. The district reached its current size in 1973 when the municipality Uffeln, which was formerly in the district Minden, was merged into the city Vlotho. Vlotho () is a town in the district of Herford, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Geography Vlotho is located along the Weser river, south of the Wiehengebirge, bordering on the Ravensberger Hügelland in the west, Lipperland in the south, and the Weserbergland in the east. The Weser river runs through the city east to north and thus separates the northeast part of the town, Uffeln, from the rest of the city. The highest point is the ''Bonstapel'' at 342 m in the south-east. Philip Louis of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg (born 27 October 1620 in Beck; died: 10 March 1689 in Schneeberg) was the founder and first duke of the line Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Wiesenburg. His branch of the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg is named after Wiesenburg Castle, near Zwickau. Life Philip Louis was the youngest son of Duke Alexander of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg (1573–1627) from his marriage to Dorothea (1579–1639), daughter of Count John Günther I of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Philip Louis spent his youth at various courts in Hesse. In 1663 he acquired the district of Wiesenburg, with Wiesenburg Castle and the city of Kirchberg and 20 villages from Elector John George II of Saxony, with whom he had a very good relationship. Spittal An Der Drau
Spittal an der Drau is a town in the western part of the Austrian federal state of Carinthia. It is the administrative centre of Spittal an der Drau District, Austria's second largest district ('' Bezirk'') by area. Geography The town is located on the southern slopes of the Gurktal Alps (Nock Mountains), between the Lurnfeld Basin and the Lower Drau Valley. Bad Oeynhausen
Bad Oeynhausen () is a spa town on the southern edge of the Wiehengebirge in the district of Minden-Lübbecke in the East-Westphalia-Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The closest larger towns are Bielefeld (39 kilometres southwest) and Hanover (80 km east). History In the village of Bergkirchen, which belongs to Bad Oeynhausen, a wellspring sanctuary existed in pre-Christian (Saxon) times at the local crossing of the Wiehengebirge, which was replaced in the 9th century by a church. Today's church is a subsequent building. On the church and the downhill-situated Widukind spring plates explain this further. A few metres from the church a 13th-century timbered homestead can still be found. In 753 Pepin the Short, according to the Royal Frankish Annals, stopped over ''ad locum qui dicitur Rimiae'', so that Rehme is commonly accepted as the oldest part of town.
