LÉ James Joyce (P62)
LÉ ''James Joyce'' (P62) is a (OPV) which was built by Babcock Marine Appledore for the Irish Naval Service. Although criticised by a descendant of the author, the ship was named for writer James Joyce. Design and construction In October 2010, the Irish Naval Service ordered a number of new offshore patrol vessels from Babcock Marine, a UK-based shipbuilder operating out of Appledore, North Devon. Like the similar LÉ Róisín (P51), ''Róisín''-class OPV, ''James Joyce'' was designed by Vard Marine. In July 2013, the name of the vessel, ''James Joyce'' was announced by the Minister for Defence Alan Shatter in Dáil Éireann. Operational history The ship was completed and floated out of the shipyard in November 2014. Following sea-trials and a number of delays it was delivered to the Naval Service in mid-2015. Haulbowline
Haulbowline (; ) is an island in Cork Harbour off the coast of Ireland. The world's first yacht club was founded on Haulbowline in 1720. The western side of the island is the main naval base and headquarters for the Irish Naval Service, with the eastern side previously used for heavy industry and later redeveloped as a park. Since 1966, the island has been connected to the mainland by a roadbridge. Etymology The island's name may derive from Old Norse ''ál-boling'' or similar = "eel dwelling" ("area where there are conger eels"). The 17th and 18th-century spellings end in "-ing"; there may have been nautical influence on the spelling later. The Irish language name for the island, ''Inis Sionnach'', translates to "island of the foxes". Samuel is a figure who, in the narratives of the Hebrew Bible, plays a key role in the transition from the biblical judges to the United Kingdom of Israel under Saul, and again in the monarchy's transition from Saul to David.
