Lynn McBain
Lynn Carol McBain is a Canadian–New Zealand academic and specialised general practitioner, and is a full professor at the University of Otago, specialising in research on medical education, and primary health services. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners. Academic career McBain completed her medical training at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. McBain then moved to New Zealand, where she initially worked as a house surgeon at Hāwera, and then worked in general practice at the Brooklyn Medical Centre in Wellington from the early 1990s until 2022. She continues to provide locum cover. McBain found she enjoyed teaching medical students that came to the medical centre, and she joined the faculty of the University of Otago in 1995 as a part time lecturer, rising to associate professor in 2018 and full professor in 2024. Ageing Well
Ageing Well ( mi, Kia eke kairangi ki te taikaumātuatanga) was one of New Zealand's eleven collaborative research programmes known as National Science Challenges. Running from 2015 to 2024, the focus of Ageing Well National Science Challenge (AWNSC) research was sustaining health and wellbeing towards the end of life, particularly in Māori and Pacific populations in New Zealand. Establishment and governance The New Zealand Government agreed in August 2012 to fund National Science Challenges: large multi-year collaborative research programmes that would address important issues in New Zealand's future. Multimorbidity, also known as multiple long-term conditions (MLTC), means living with two or more chronic illnesses. For example, a person could have diabetes, heart disease and depression at the same time. Multimorbidity can have a significant impact on people's health and wellbeing. It also poses a complex challenge to healthcare systems which are traditionally focused on individual diseases. Multiple long-term conditions are much more common in older people, affecting more than half of those over 65, however, they can also be found in young people. Cervical Screening
Cervical screening is the process of detecting and removing abnormal tissue or cells in the cervix before cervical cancer develops. By aiming to detect and treat cervical neoplasia early on, cervical screening aims at secondary prevention of cervical cancer. Primary prevention of cervical cancer is vaccination against HPV. Several screening methods for cervical cancer are the Pap test (also known as Pap smear or conventional cytology), liquid-based cytology, the HPV DNA testing and the visual inspection with acetic acid. Pap test and liquid-based cytology have been effective in diminishing incidence and mortality rates of cervical cancer in developed countries but not in developing countries.
