Lyngen (; ) is a List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Troms Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Lyngseidet. Other notable villages include Furuflaten, Lattervika, Nord-Lenangen, and Svensby. The municipality is the 141st largest by area out of the 357 municipalities in Norway. Lyngen is the 242nd most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 2,743. The municipality's population density is and its population has decreased by 8.3% over the previous 10-year period. General information The prestegjeld, parish of Lyngen was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). Lyngen Alps
The Lyngen Alps (, , ) are a mountain range in northeastern Troms county in Norway, east of the city of Tromsø. The mountain range is located on the Lyngen Peninsula and it runs through Lyngen Municipality, Balsfjord Municipality, Storfjord Municipality, and Tromsø Municipality. The mountains follow the western shore of the Lyngen fjord in a north–south direction. The length of the range is at least (depending on definition—there are mountains all the way south to the border with Sweden) and the width is . The mountains dominate the Lyngen Peninsula, which is bordered by the Lyngen fjord to the east, and the Ullsfjorden to the west. There are 140 glaciers in the mountains covering about of the Lyngen Peninsula at present. Gamvikblåisen and Strupenbreen are the two largest in the outer part of the peninsula, while in the interior Fornesbreen and the Jiehkkevárri glacial complex are the largest. Lyngen (fjord)
, , or is a fjord in Troms county, Norway. The long fjord is the longest fjord in Troms county and it is often used as the dividing line between "northern Troms" and "southern Troms". The fjord is located within the municipalities of Skjervøy, Nordreisa, Lyngen, Gáivuotna–Kåfjord, and Storfjord. It stretches from the village of Hatteng in Storfjord Municipality in the south all the way north to the islands of Skjervøy Municipality. The Lyngen Alps lie on the Lyngen Peninsula along the western shore of the fjord. The European route E06 highway runs along the eastern shore of the fjord. The Kåfjorden branches off of the main fjord on the east side, and the southernmost part of the fjord is also known as the Storfjorden. Lyngen Church
Lyngen Church () is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Lyngen Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the village of Lyngseidet. It is the main church for the Lyngen parish which is part of the Nord-Troms prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, wooden church was built in a cruciform style with a steeple, sacristy, and porch. The building was constructed in 1782 by an unknown architect. The church seats about 310 people. History The first church in Lyngen was built in 1731 in Karnes, about south of the present location of the church. In 1740, it was decided that the church should be moved about north to the larger village of Lyngseidet, so the church was disassembled, moved, and then rebuilt in the new location. There were three reasons for the move: It was easier for the priest from Karlsøy Church to get to Lyngseidet, the Sami people in Ullsfjord would have an easier way to the church, and there was lack of water and firewood at t ... Lyngen Horse
The Nordlandshest/Lyngshest also known as the "Nordland/Lyngen horse", "nordland horse" or "Lyngen horse", is a horse breed originating in Norway. It is the smallest of the three Norwegian national horse breeds. It originated in the area surrounding the Lyngen fjord in what is now Lyngen Municipality. The horse was given the name Nordlandshest in 1968 by breeders in that area. The name change was hotly disputed by breeders in Lyngen and surrounding areas, but a compromise was later reached, and today the official name of the breed is both Nordlandshest and Lyngshest.
