Luísa Basto (born 1947) is a Portuguese singer, best known for her recordings of the anthem of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), ''Avante Camarada'' (Forward comrade), and of ''É Para Ti Mulher Esta Canção'' (This song is for you, woman), anthem of the Portuguese ''Movimento Democrático de Mulheres'' (Women's Democratic Movement - MDM) Early life Luísa Basto was born as Úrsula Lobato in Serpa, Portugal in 1947. Her parents, who both liked to sing, were militant supporters of the PCP and its opposition to Portugal's authoritarian '' Estado Novo'' regime. They adopted a clandestine existence when their daughter was only 12 years old and she lived with them in clandestine houses in Lisbon and Sintra for over a year, printing communist publications, until they were arrested by the secret police. Serpa
Serpa () is a city and a Concelho (municipality) in the central Portuguese region Alentejo. The population in 2011 was 15,623, in an area of . The Guadiana River flows close to the town of Serpa. History Serpa has its origins in early settlement that preceded the Roman occupation of the Iberian peninsula. The neighbouring town of Beja (known as ''Pax Julia'' by the Romans) became the capital of southern Lusitanian (''Pacensis''). Serpa grew through the settlement of Roman colonists, with proof coming from various archaeological remains within the Roman villa. Manuel Alegre de Melo Duarte, GCL (born 12 May 1936) is a Portuguese poet and politician, member of the Socialist Party, and a candidate for the 2006 Portuguese presidential election. Fado
Fado (; "destiny, fate") is a music genre that can be traced to the 1820s in Lisbon, Portugal, but probably has much earlier origins. Fado historian and scholar Rui Vieira Nery states that "the only reliable information on the history of fado was orally transmitted and goes back to the 1820s and 1830s at best. But even that information was frequently modified within the generational transmission process that made it reach us today." Although the origins are difficult to trace, today fado is commonly regarded as simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain traditional structure. Fernando Travassos Tordo (born March 29, 1948 in Lisbon, Portugal) is Portuguese singer and songwriter. Carlos Mendes (born December 25, 1980) is an American soccer manager and former player currently serving as head coach of the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's soccer program.
