Valencia, officially the Municipality of Valencia, is a municipality in the province of Negros Oriental, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 38,733 people. The municipality was voted as "the greenest and cleanest" town of Negros Oriental in 2007. Our Lady of the Abandoned is the patroness of Valencia, and her feast day is celebrated annually every October 12 with the town fiesta. The fiesta is an official non-working holiday for the town. History Valencia was originally named Ermita, which means "a secluded place", due to its being a refuge from marauding Muslim pirates. In 1856, it was renamed Nueva Valencia by Spanish colonizers, in honor of its parish priest Father Matias Villamayor from Valencia, Spain. Katherine Luzuriaga
Katherine Luzuriaga is an American physician and pediatric immunologist who primarily works on HIV/AIDS at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). She is currently a vice provost at UMMS and the director of the UMass Center for Clinical and Translational Science. Early life and education Luzuriaga was born in Bacolod and grew up in the Philippines; she was the second of six children. She majored in biochemistry and earned both her BSc and her MSc from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She earned her MD from Tufts before completing a pediatrics residency at Tufts Floating Children’s Hospital and fellowship training in adult and pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She cites both her parents in her decision to become a medical doctor: her father was an engineer who taught her a love of science and math and her mother was a nurse. Toribio De Luzuriaga
Toribio de Luzuriaga y Mejía (16 April 1782 – 1 May 1842) was a Peruvian-Argentine soldier and the first Grand Marshal of Peru. Biography Born in Huaraz on 16 April 1782, Toribio de Luzuriaga was the son of Manuel de Luzuriaga y Elgarreta, a Basque merchant from Biscay, and María Josefa Mejía de Estrada. In 1797, he worked as private secretary to Gabriel de Avilés y del Fierro, promoted Captain general of Chile and then Viceroy of the Río de la Plata in 1799. When Gabriel de Avilés was appointed Viceroy of Peru in 1801, Luzuriaga preferred to remain in Buenos Aires and decided to embrace a military career by entering the cavalry volunteer regiment of Buenos Aires. He distinguished himself during the British invasions of the River Plate and was taken prisoner by the English in 1806.
