Luther Pemberton
Luther Pemberton was born on 21 February 1866 in Oswaldtwistle, a small town close to Blackburn and Accrington. He was an English footballer. In 1885 he joined Bell's Temperance F.C., an Accrington based Football Club who played in the 1880's and 1890's competing in the FA Cup. Season 1888-89 Luther Pemberton made his League debut on 8 September 1888, playing at wing-half, at Anfield, then home of Everton on 8 September 1888. Accrington lost the match 2–1. Luther Pemberton played 16 of Accrington' 22 League games in season 1888–89. Pemberton played wing-half in a midfield that achieved big (three-League-goals-or-more) wins on two occasions. Luther Pemberton helped Accrington to finish 7th in the League, on goal average above Everton. Oswaldtwistle
Oswaldtwistle ( "ozwel twizzel") is a town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, England, southeast of Blackburn, contiguous with Accrington. The town has a rich industrial heritage, being home to James Hargreaves, inventor of the spinning jenny, and Robert "Parsley" Peel of calico printing fame. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal passes through the town and was responsible for the export of much of the area's cotton produce. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 11,803. In 2021 the population had decreased to 10,815 History The name is derived from "Oswald" and "Twistle". The word "twistle" is an old English word meaning "brooks meet". Legend has it that Saint Oswald, King of Northumbria passed through, giving the area its full title of Oswald's Twistle, which in time came to be Oswaldtwistle. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, it is the oldest football league in the world, and was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. 1890–91 Football League
The 1890– 91 Football League was the third Football league season. After dominating and being crowned champions for the first two football league seasons Preston North End slipped to second and Everton won the league with a two-point gap. Meanwhile, there had been changes in the league since the last football league season, Stoke had not been re-elected to the football league, so joined the rival Football Alliance. They were replaced with Sunderland, who were nicknamed "the team of all talents" at the time. 1889–90 Football League
The 1889– 90 Football League was the second season of English league football, with Preston North End being crowned as the champions for the second successive season. The clubs competing were the 12 original clubs which were the founders of the league the previous year. Unlike the modern system, two points were awarded for a win, with one for a draw and no points for a loss; this system remained until three points for a win were awarded beginning with the 1981–82 season. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield player whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Anfield is a Association football, football stadium in the area of Anfield (suburb), Anfield, Liverpool, England, which has been the home of Liverpool F.C. since its formation in 1892.
