Luther North
Luther High School North, formerly known as Luther North College Prep, was a private high school located in the Portage Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It was affiliated with the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. Its predecessor was Luther Institute, founded in 1909 as a Lutheran High School and located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago. In 1953 the school moved to a campus in Portage Park, Chicago. Enrollment peaked at about 1,400 in the 1960s and 1970s, but declined thereafter. Due to financial difficulties, the Portage Park campus was sold to New Life Community Church in 2010, with the school sharing occupancy. In February 2017, with an enrollment of only 170 students despite recruiting efforts, the school announced that it would cease operations after the 2016–2017 school year. Notable alumni * David W. Super Bowl XVII
Super Bowl XVII was an American football game between the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Miami Dolphins and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Washington Redskins to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the strike-shortened 1982 season. The Redskins defeated the Dolphins, 27–17, to win their first Super Bowl championship and first NFL championship since 1942. The game was played on January 30, 1983, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This Super Bowl came at the end of a season that was significantly shortened by a players' strike. Teams ended up only playing nine regular season games, and the league conducted a special 16-team, four-round playoff tournament where divisions were ignored in the seeding. Ken Grundt
Kenneth Allan Grundt (born August 26, 1969) is an American former middle-relief pitcher who played in Major League Baseball. Listed at 6'4", 195 lb., he threw left-handed. Grundt went to Luther High School North in Chicago. He played college baseball with the Missouri Southern Lions, and got drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 53rd round of the 1991 MLB June Amateur Draft (1,354th). He played from 1992 through 1998 for the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox, and Florida Marlins organizations, collecting a 31–19 mark with a 2.58 ERA and 35 saves in 288 appearances. Grundt entered the majors in 1996 with the Boston Red Sox (first game on August 8, 1996, at Age 26), playing for them until the 1997 midseason.
