Lupu Pick
Lupu Pick (2 January 1886 – 7 March 1931) was a German actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter of the silent era. He appeared in 50 films between 1910 and 1928. Born in Romania, Pick's father was a Jewish Austrian,Hans Morgenstern "Jüdisches biographisches Lexikon. Eine Sammlung von bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten jüdischer Herkunft ab 1800", LIT Verlag, Vienna; p.637 his mother, of Romanian origin. He began as a stage actor in Hamburg, Flensburg and Berlin before 1910. In 1917 he founded the film company Rex-Film AG. He served on the board of the Film Association of Industrialists (''Vorstand des Verbandes der Filmindustriellen''), SPIO and the Film Directors Association of Germany (''Verbandes der Filmregisseure Deutschlands'') and worked intensively to establish the union-based umbrella organization of Filmmakers in Germany (''Filmschaffenden Deutschlands'') (Dacho). Let There Be Light (1917 Film)
''Let There Be Light'' (german: Es werde Licht!) is a 1917 German silent drama film directed by Richard Oswald and starring Bernd Aldor, Hugo Flink and Nelly Lagarst. It was followed by three sequels. The film was a protest against Germany's anti-abortion law, and also touched on the dangers of syphilis. It is a lost film. The film's sets were designed by the art director August Rinaldi. Manfred Noa was employed as an artistic consultant. ''New Year's Eve'' (german: Sylvester: Tragödie einer Nacht) is a 1924 German silent '' Kammerspielfilm'' directed by Lupu Pick and written by Carl Mayer. It was filmed in 1923 and premiered in Berlin on 4 January 1924. The film is known to be one of the earliest examples of a kammerspielfilm and was innovative in its extensive use of "entfesselte Kamera", using tracking and gliding techniques as opposed to keeping the camera stationary. Like Pick's previous films, ''New Year's Eve'' does not use intertitles. Plot A man is celebrating New Year's Eve with his wife and his mother, who are at odds with one another. As the evening progresses, the rivalry between the two women increases to an open hatred that eventually escalates into a big fight. The man assumes no position in favor of either woman and instead chooses to flee from the conflict.
