Lunglei (, locally ), formerly rendered Lungleh, is the second-largest town in Mizoram, northeastern India, situated in the south-central part of the state. The town served as the capital of British South Lushai Hills from 1889 to 1898. It is situated 729 metres (2,392 feet) above sea level, on a ridge surrounded by hills. As of 2023, the town has an estimated population of 157,000. History Lungleh was the capital of South Lushai Hills for 10 years from 1880, as was Aijal for the North Lushai Hills. The two were united in 1898. Lunglei is the largest town in Mizoram and was an important town until the partition of India as it had direct access to Chittagong, a big city in Bangladesh which made Lunglei the commercial and education centre. As of 1912, there were only 2 shops in Lunglei 1922 which increased to 4 shopes in 1922. The Assam Rifles (AR) is a paramilitary force of India responsible for border security, counter-insurgency, and maintaining law and order in Northeast India and in Jammu & Kashmir in lines of Rashtriya Rifles. Karnaphuli River
The Karnaphuli River ( ''Kôrnophuli''; also spelt Karnafuli and Khawthlangtuipui in Mizo, meaning "western river" and Borgang in Chakma, meaning "Big River") is the largest and most important river in Chittagong and the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It is a wide river in the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from the Saithah village of Mamit district in Mizoram, India, it flows southwest through Chattogram Hill Tracts and Chattogram into the Bay of Bengal. It is the fastest flowing river in Bangladesh, after the Padma. It is said to "represent the drainage system of the whole south-western part of Mizoram." Tlabung
Tlabung, also known as Demagiri, is a census town in Lunglei district in the Indian state of Mizoram. History The township was first established and settled in November 1871 when the Superintendent of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, Lt. Col. T.H. Lewin, ordered his assistant, Mr. Crouch and 150 soldiers from the Frontier Battalion to build a fort at Tlabung to serve as the battalion headquarters of the Southern Column of the Lushai Expedition to rescue a young girl named Mary Winchester from the Lushai Chief Bengkhuaia. On 1 April 1898, it became a part of the South Lushai Hills, having previously belonged to the Chittagong Hill Tracts. It became a flourishing trade center during 1860-70 when Mizo in the north and south had less knowledge of commerce.
