Lukian Kobylytsia
Lukian Kobylytsia (also Lucian Kobylicza; Ukrainian language, Ukrainian: Лук'ян Кобилиця; Romanian language, Romanian: Luchian Cobiliță) (1812 – 1851) was a Ukrainians, Ukrainian Bukovinian activist, political leader and farmer. He was the leader of the popular uprisings in Bukovina from 1843 to 1844 and from 1848 to 1849, and a member of the Imperial Diet (Austria), Austrian Reichstag. Biography Lukian Kobylytsia was born in 1812 to serf parents in Putyla, in what is now the Ukrainian Oblast of Chernivtsi Oblast, Chernivtsi. In 1839 he was elected by the farmers as their public representative in order to represent their interests. In reaction to the ban on the use of forests by farmers, in late 1843 the farmers of 22 villages in Bukovina refused to carry out the duties imposed on them, demanding the establishment of Ukrainian schools, free access to forests and pastures and improving their status. Putyla
Putyla (; ), formerly Storonets-Putyliv (), is a rural settlement in Vyzhnytsia Raion, Chernivtsi Oblast, western Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Putyla settlement hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. At the 2001 census, the town's population was 3,265. Current population: History The town of Putyla was first mentioned in 1501 along with other local settlements, which the Polish Crown gave to Ioan Tăutu for settling the peace between Poland and Principality of Moldavia. In 1817, the local villagers complained to Austrian Emperor Francis II that they had their taxes increased the past 10 years. In 1843, the villagers were informed that they could no longer use and cultivate the nearby forest, after which an uprising occurred, resulting in the imprisonment of 14 local leaders.
