Lukeville Port Of Entry
The Lukeville, Arizona Port of Entry was established by Executive Order in 1949. It has primarily been a port of entry for passenger vehicles and pedestrians. It connects Mexican Federal Highway 8 in Sonoyta, Sonora, with Arizona State Route 85, in Lukeville, Arizona. Modifications made using funding from the Federal Highway Administration and Mexican businesses in 2011 facilitate the inspection of trucks and improve general throughput. Much of the traffic using this crossing is people traveling to the popular beach town of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. Lukeville, Arizona
Lukeville is a small unincorporated town on the Mexico–United States border in southern Pima County, Arizona, United States. It was named for World War I aviator Frank Luke, an Arizona native who was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. Description The community lies at Lukeville Port of Entry border crossing into Sonoyta, Sonora, Mexico. It is the terminus of State Route 85 and is located entirely within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. There is a stop-over spot for buses that are bound for Phoenix and Tucson along with a post office and a duty-free shop. Its population was approximately 35 at the 2000 census, 27 (77%) of whom were Hispanic or Latino. A project to replace portions of the Mexico–United States barrier in this area began in 2019. Sonoyta, Sonora is a town in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. It stands on the U.S.-Mexico border, facing Lukeville, Arizona, in the United States. It is the municipal seat of the municipality of Plutarco Elías Calles. Demographics According to the 2010 census, the city had 12,849 inhabitants while the surrounding municipality had 15,652 inhabitants. State Route 85 (SR 85) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Arizona. The highway runs from the United States–Mexico border near Lukeville to the north ending at Interstate 10 (I-10) in Buckeye. The highway also intersects I-8 in Gila Bend and serves as a connector between I-8 and I-10 and for travelers between Phoenix and Yuma as well as San Diego.
