Lukas Verzbicas
Lukas Verzbicas (born ''Lukas Veržbickas'', January 6, 1993 in Kaunas, Lithuania) is an American triathlete. Once a prominent high school track and cross country runner, Verzbicas set the U.S. high school national record in the two mile with a time of 8:29.46, in June 2011 after graduating from high school the month prior. He was also the fifth American high school boy to run a sub four-minute mile, running 3:59.71 a week after setting the national record in the two mile. Early life Verzbicas was born in Kaunas, Lithuania and moved to the US with his mother and stepfather at age nine. The family lived in Orland Park, Illinois where Verzbicas attended Carl Sandburg High School, graduating in May 2011. Verzbicas graduated at age 18 after attending high school for just 3 years. Track and field (or athletics in British English) is a sport that includes Competition#Sports, athletic contests based on running, jumping, and throwing skills. The name used in North America is derived from where the sport takes place, a running track and a grass field for the throwing and some of the jumping events. Marty Liquori
Martin William Liquori (born September 11, 1949) is a retired American Middle distance track event, middle distance Athletics (sport), athlete. Liquori rose to fame when he became the List of high school students who have run a four minute mile, third American high schooler to break the four-minute mile by running a 3:59.8 in 1967, three years after Jim Ryun first did it. Biography He grew up in Cedar Grove, New Jersey and attended Essex Catholic High School. After high school, Liquori enrolled at Villanova University. There he was coached by Jumbo Elliott (coach), Jumbo Elliott. Liquori made the U.S. Olympic Games, Olympic team in 1968 as a nineteen-year-old freshman. Timothy Ralph Danielson (December 3, 1947 - November 26, 2024) was a former American middle-distance runner. He was one of only 21 U.S. high school athletes to ever run the mile in under four minutes. In 2014, he was convicted of the first-degree murder of his ex-wife. Jim Ryun
James Ronald Ryun (born April 29, 1947) is an American former Republican Party (United States), Republican politician and Olympic track and field athlete, who at his peak was widely considered the world's top middle-distance runner. He won a silver medal in the Athletics at the 1968 Summer Olympics – Men's 1500 metres, 1500 m at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and was the first high school athlete to run a mile in under four minutes. New York Diamond League
The USATF New York Grand Prix is an annual athletics meeting held at Icahn Stadium in New York City, New York. The event was part of the IAAF Grand Prix from 2007 to 2009. For 2010 it was promoted to the top-level Diamond League through 2015. It was known as the Reebok Grand Prix, and the Adidas Grand Prix until 2015. For the 2016 Diamond League, the New York meet was replaced by Rabat, Morocco. Local organizers the same day said they would announce plans to carry on the meet as a street event in New York. German Fernandez
German Fernandez (born November 2, 1990) is a retired American professional runner from Riverbank, California, known for his performance in high school and collegiate cross country and track and field. Later he trained under Jerry Schumacher for the Bowerman Track Club. He is most well known for running the California Cross Country State Meet course record (14:24), as well as running a new American high-school record, 8:34.40 for two miles, at the 2008 Nike Outdoor Nationals championship. He previously held the World Junior Indoor Mile record at 3:55.02 until it was broken by Cameron Myers with a time of 3:53.12, subsequently bettered to 3:47.48. The Prefontaine Classic is a track and field meet held at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, United States. Organized by the Oregon Track Club, it was previously one of the IAAF Grand Prix events, and is now part of the Diamond League. Millrose Games
The Millrose Games are an annual indoor athletics (track & field) meet held each February in New York City. Among the world's most prestigious indoor track meets, the games started taking place at the Armory in Washington Heights in 2012, after having taken place in Madison Square Garden from 1914 to 2011. The games were started when employees of the New York City branch of Wanamaker's department store formed the Millrose Track Club to hold a meet. Today, the Millrose Games feature elite competitions for athletes at all levels, including youth, club, masters, high school, collegiate, and professional levels. The National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document used to indicate a student athlete's commitment to participating in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) colleges and universities in the United States. The NCAA Eligibility Center manages the daily operations of the NLI program while the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) provides governance oversight of the program. Started in 1964 with seven conferences and eight independent institutions, the program included 676 Division I and II participating institutions through the 2023–24 school year.
