Lucky Devils (1941 Film)
''Lucky Devils'' is a 1941 American mystery film directed by Lew Landers and starring Andy Devine, Richard Arlen and Janet Shaw. It was produced and released by Hollywood studio Universal Pictures. Maria Montez has a small role. Plot A sly pair of newsreel reporters, Dick McManus and Andy Tompkins, who work for the Mercury News Reel Company, has made a profession of photographing stories featuring daredevil acts by ordinary people. One of the exciting places for doing these acts is the Phillips Dam and it's often visible in the two reporters' photos. This fact is used by two foreign saboteurs, R. W. Ritter and Berko. The saboteurs are planning to destroy the dam and have great help from the reporters' footage. At the same time, reporters Dick and Andy are informed by their editor, K. W. Momsen, at the Mercury News Reel Company offices, that they may be held responsible if anything does happen to the dam. Lew Landers
Lew Landers (born Louis Friedlander, January 2, 1901 – December 16, 1962) was an American independent film and television director. Biography Born as Louis Friedlander in New York City, Lew Landers began his movie career as an actor. In 1914, he appeared in two features: D.W. Griffith's drama ''The Escape (1914 film), The Escape'' and the comedy short ''Admission – Two Pins'', under his birth name. He became an assistant director at Universal Pictures in 1922. He began making films in the 1930s, one of his early ones being the Boris Karloff / Bela Lugosi thriller ''The Raven (1935 film), The Raven'' (1935). After directing a few more features, he changed his name to Lew Landers and directed more than 100 films in a variety of genres, including Westerns, comedies, and horror movies. Shemp Howard (born Samuel Horwitz; March 11, 1895 – November 22, 1955) was an American comedian and actor. He is best known as the third Stooge in The Three Stooges, a role he played when the act began in the early 1920s (1923–1932), while it was still associated with Ted Healy and known as "Ted Healy and his Stooges"; and again from 1946 until his death in 1955. During the fourteen years between his times with the Stooges, he had a successful solo career as a film comedian, including a series of shorts by himself and with partners. Gladys Blake (born Gladys Timmons; May 12, 1910 – May 21, 1983) was an American character actress from the 1930s to the 1950s. Biography Blake was born on January 12, 1910, in Luray, Virginia. Her mother, Ada Timmons, died when Gladys was less than a year old. At fourteen, she entered the theater world in a stock company, before moving on to vaudeville. In vaudeville, she met her husband, Lee Gresham, and the two formed an act together. Tim Ryan (actor)
Timothy Thomas Ryan (July 5, 1899 – October 22, 1956) was an American performer and film actor. Life and career Ryan was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, on July 5, 1899, to Edward and Hannah (née McGeehan) Ryan. He teamed with wife Irene Ryan, who later played Granny on ''The Beverly Hillbillies'', as "Tim and Irene," an act who performed on Broadway, in films and on radio. They appeared in short films for Educational Pictures in the mid-1930s based on their vaudeville act. The Ryans were married from 1922 to 1942. Even after their divorce in 1942, the couple occasionally worked together. In the 1940s, Ryan acted in films and wrote screenplays at Monogram Pictures. He appeared in film roles as policemen, newspaper editors and detectives. Ryan died in Los Angeles on October 22, 1956, at the age of 57. August "Gus" Schilling (June 20, 1908 – June 16, 1957) was an American film actor who started in burlesque comedy and usually played nervous comic roles, often unbilled. A friend of Orson Welles, he appeared in five of the director's films — ''Citizen Kane'' (first screen performance), '' The Magnificent Ambersons'', '' The Lady from Shanghai'', ''Macbeth'' and '' Touch of Evil'' (final performance, released posthumously). Career Born in New York City, Schilling had a rubber face and flustered gestures which made him a natural comedian and he began his career understudying comedy stars Bert Lahr and Joe Penner on Broadway.
