Lucius D. Richards
Lucius Dunbar Richards (November 26, 1847August 19, 1931) was a banker and businessman who served as the mayor of Fremont, Nebraska, for two terms and ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Nebraska in the 1890 election. Early life Richards was born in Charleston, Vermont, on November 26, 1947, to parents Silas and Sarah Richards. At the age of 14 in August 1862, he enlisted in Company I, Fifteenth Vermont Volunteer Infantry to fight in the Civil War. He fought at the Battle of Gettysburg. Richards' regiment was commanded by Redfield Proctor, who later became United States Secretary of War and a United States Senator. Richards served nine months as Proctor's orderly which resulted in a lifelong friendship. Richards later reenlisted in Company K, Seventeenth Vermont Volunteer Infantry. Fremont is a city in and the county seat of Dodge County, Nebraska, Dodge County in the eastern portion of the state of Nebraska in the Midwestern United States. History From the 1830s to the 1860s, the area saw a great deal of traffic due to the Mormon Trail, which passed along the north bank of the Platte River. Scribner, Nebraska
Scribner is a city in Dodge County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 857 at the 2010 census. History Scribner was platted in 1870 by Lucius D. Richards when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named for publishing magnate Charles Scribner I. Today, Scribner remains a town of trade, even though the railroad no longer serves the town. By the mid-1970s, the future of railroad service came into question. The Chicago & North Western tracks had been experiencing mildly declining freight traffic volumes. Revenue railroad service ultimately ended in spring of 1982, when flooding from the Elkhorn River & nearby Pebble Creek damaged sections of the track. With freight traffic mildly declining & flooding damage, the C&NW promptly filed a request with the Interstate Commerce Commission to abandon the line. Lorenzo Crounse
Lorenzo Crounse (January 27, 1834May 13, 1909) was a Nebraska Republican politician and the eighth Governor of Nebraska. Early life Born in Sharon in Schoharie County, New York, Crounse attended the New York Conference Seminary in Charlotteville, New York. While teaching school, he studied law and in 1857 he was admitted to the bar. In 1860, he married Mary E. Griffiths and they had four children. Career Crounse established a law practice at Fort Plain, New York. During the Civil War he organized Battery K, New York Light Artillery and became a captain in 1861, served for a year; but was discharged after suffering wounds at a battle on the Rappahannock River in Virginia and resumed his law practice. Crounse moved to the Nebraska Territory in 1864, and became part of the territorial legislature and later was a delegate to the state's constitutional convention. John Milton Thayer
John Milton Thayer (January 24, 1820March 19, 1906) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later a United States Senator from Nebraska, Governor of Wyoming Territory, and Governor of Nebraska. Early life Thayer was born in Bellingham, Massachusetts. He attended and taught in rural schools. He graduated from Brown University in 1841, and established a practice in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he was the editor of the ''Worcester Magazine'' and the ''Historical Journal''. He served as a lieutenant in the local militia company before deciding to move with his family to the West. He was married to Mary Torrey Allen on December 27, 1842, and they had six children. The 1920 Republican National Convention nominated Ohio Senator Warren G. Harding for president and Massachusetts Governor Calvin Coolidge for vice president. The convention was held in Chicago, Illinois, at the Chicago Coliseum from June 8 to June 12, 1920, with 940 delegates. Under convention rules, a majority plus one, or at least 471 of the 940 delegates, was necessary for a nomination. The 1892 Republican National Convention was held at the Industrial Exposition Building, Minneapolis, Minnesota, from June 7 to June 10, 1892. The party nominated President Benjamin Harrison for re-election on the first ballot and Whitelaw Reid of New York for vice president. James S.
