Lublin R-XI
The Lublin R-XI was the Polish passenger plane for 4 passengers, designed in 1930 in the Plage i LaÅ›kiewicz factory in Lublin, that remained a prototype. Development The aircraft was developed for a contest for a successor of Junkers F-13 as a light passenger and mail plane in LOT Polish Airlines, announced by the Ministry of Communication. The design was partly modeled on a construction of Fokker F.VII, produced under license by Plage i LaÅ›kiewicz, especially in a wing design. The main designer was Jerzy Rudlicki. The prototype was first flown on 8 February 1930 in Lublin (registration: SP-ACC). From June 1930 it was evaluated by the LOT Airlines. The prototype was damaged during take-off in July 1931, and was not repaired. The aircraft was not successful, because its weight appeared 250 kg more, than designed, it also had worse speed, range and ceiling, than expected (its competitor, the PWS-21, was not successful either). Plage i LaÅ›kiewicz (Plage & LaÅ›kiewicz) was the first Polish aerospace manufacturer, located in Lublin and manufacturing aircraft under Lublin name. Full name was: ''ZakÅ‚ady Mechaniczne E. Lublin is the ninth-largest city in Poland and the second-largest city of historical Lesser Poland. The Lublin R-XII was the Polish three-seat sports and touring aircraft, designed in 1930 in the Plage i LaÅ›kiewicz factory in Lublin, that remained a prototype. Design and development Plage i LaÅ›kiewicz works was among factories, that developed sports aircraft for an order of the LOPP paramilitary organization. Its design, the Lublin R-XII, was basically a scaled down passenger aircraft Lublin R-XI. The main designer was Jerzy Rudlicki. The only prototype was flown in autumn 1930 (registration SP-AFB). It was not built in series. The aircraft was not successful and its performance was not satisfactory because of too much weight. It did not take part in the 3rd Polish Light Aircraft contest because of a weight limit. It was owned by the factory and little used, after a few years it was scrapped. NACA Cowling
The NACA cowling is a type of aerodynamic fairing used to streamline radial engines installed on airplanes. It was developed by Fred Weick of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1927. It was a major advance in aerodynamic drag reduction, and paid for its development and installation costs many times over due to the gains in fuel efficiency that it enabled. History and design The NACA cowling enhanced speed through drag reduction while delivering improved engine cooling. The cowling consists of a symmetric, circular airfoil that is wrapped around the engine. In a normal planar airfoil, like a wing, it is the difference in airspeed, and their associated changes in pressure, on the top and bottom of the surface that produces lift.
