Loweomyces Fractipes
''Loweomyces fractipes'' is a species of polypore, poroid fungus in the family Steccherinaceae, and the type species of the genus ''Loweomyces''. It is a widely distributed species, found in North America, Europe, Central America, South America, and Korea. Taxonomy The fungus was originally species description, described in 1872 as ''Polypores fractipes'' by Miles Berkeley and Moses Ashley Curtis. The type specimens had been sent to Berkeley by American botanist Henry William Ravenel. It has been transferred to many different polypore genera in its taxonomic history. William Alphonso Murrill, William Murrill moved it to ''Grifola'' in 1904, while it was later transferred to ''Abortiporus'' (Bondartsev, 1959), ''Heteroporus'' (Fidalgo, 1969), and ''Spongipellis'' (Kotl., Kotlaba & Pouzar, 1976). Henry William Ravenel
Henry William Ravenel (May 19, 1814 – July 17, 1887) was an American planter and botanist. He studied fungi and cryptogams in South Carolina, discovering a large number of new species. The genus '' Ravenelia'' is named after him, along with many of the species he discovered. Biography Early life Henry William Ravenel was born on May 19, 1814 on the Pooshee Plantation in Berkeley County, South Carolina. The plantation had been in his family since before 1716. Clamp Connection
A clamp connection is a hook-like structure formed by growing hyphal cells of certain fungi. It is a characteristic feature of Basidiomycetes fungi. It is created to ensure that each cell, or segment of hypha separated by septa (cross walls), receives a set of differing nuclei, which are obtained through mating of hyphae of differing sexual types. It is used to maintain genetic variation within the hypha much like the mechanisms found in crozier (hook) during sexual reproduction. Formation Clamp connections are formed by the terminal hypha during elongation. Before the clamp connection is formed this terminal segment contains two nuclei. ''Loweomyces'' is a genus of six species of poroid fungi in the family Steccherinaceae (formerly placed in the Meruliaceae). Taxonomy It was originally circumscribed as a subgenus of ''Spongipellis'' by the Czech mycologists František Kotlaba and Zdeněk Pouzar in 1976. Swiss mycologist Walter Jülich promoted it to a genus segregate from ''Spongipellis'' in 1982, with two species: '' L. fractipes'' (the type), and '' L. wynneae''. Jülich thought the genus should be distinct from ''Spongipellis'' based on the larger basidia, the absence of skeletal hyphae, and smaller tubes.
