Lowell Ordnance Plant
The Lowell Ordnance Plant was a small arms plant located on the border of Lowell, Billerica, and Tewksbury, Massachusetts that operated under contract from the Remington Arms Company between 1942 and 1943. It mostly produced .50 caliber machine gun ammo. A small run of .30 caliber machine gun ammo was also manufactured for less than a year. The site has been identified as contaminated and has been undergoing remediation since the mid-1980s. It is currently being used as an industrial park. The largest building in the industrial park was demolished during Summer 2020, to facilitate construction of a proposed Home Depot e-commerce warehouse. Small Arms
A firearm is any type of gun that uses an explosive charge and is designed to be readily carried and operated by an individual. The term is legally defined further in different countries (see legal definitions). The first firearms originated in 10th-century China, when bamboo tubes containing gunpowder and pellet projectiles were mounted on spears to make the portable fire lance, operable by a single person, which was later used effectively as a shock weapon in the siege of De'an in 1132. In the 13th century, fire lance barrels were replaced with metal tubes and transformed into the metal-barreled hand cannon. The technology gradually spread throughout Eurasia during the 14th century. Older firearms typically used black powder as a propellant, but modern firearms use smokeless powder or other explosive propellants. Most modern firearms (with the notable exception of smoothbore shotguns) have rifled barrels to impart spin to the projectile for improved flight stabili ... Billerica, Massachusetts
Billerica ( ) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 42,119 according to the 2020 census. It takes its name from the town of Billericay in Essex, England. History In the early 1630s, a Praying Indian village named Shawshin was at the current site of Billerica, commonly spelled Shawsheen today, as in the Shawsheen River. In 1638, Massachusetts Bay Governor John Winthrop and Lt. Governor Thomas Dudley were granted land along the Concord River in the area, and roughly a dozen families from Cambridge and Charlestown Village had begun to occupy Shawshin by 1652. The settlers chose the name Billerica because some of the families originally came from the town of Billericay in Essex, England. The town was incorporated as Billerica in 1655, on the same day as neighboring Chelmsford and nearby Groton. The original plantation of Billerica was divided during the colonial period into the towns of Billerica, Bedford, Wilmington, and Tewksbu ... Tewksbury, Massachusetts
Tewksbury is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. Its population was 31,342 as of the 2020 United States census. History Tewksbury was first settled in 1637 and was officially incorporated on December 17, 1734, from Billerica. The act that made this was the act of ANNO Regni Regis GEORGII Secundi Octavo. It states residents were not close enough to middle of town so they broke apart. There is no evidence that the town was named after Tewkesbury, England. The most probable reason for the adoption of the town's name was in honor of George II of Great Britain, who from 1706 to 1714, held the title of Baron of Tewkesbury. Still, Tewksbury, Massachusetts and Tewkesbury, England kept connected through a local committee called the Twinning Committee. Tewksbury also owned a section of Lowell, but not much is known on the topic aside from it being the lands east where the Merrimack River and Concord River meet, referred to by Tewksbury citizens as Belvidere. ...
