Lovedale, New South Wales
Lovedale is a locality in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales. It is two hours from Sydney, 30 minutes from Newcastle, and is connected to the Hunter Expressway. The name is believed to be a combination of one of the early European families, the Loves, with the memories of the hills and dales of Yorkshire. At the , it had a population of 485. History A major wine producing area since the 1800s when wheat and general produce farming turned to grapes, James Busby was vital in establishing the Hunter Valley as a key wine region by purchasing many properties in and around the Lovedale area. European settlement can be traced back to 1825 with significant land grants along Black Creek. Attractions It is famous for the Lovedale Long Lunch which is a two-day festival held in May. Lovedale (South Africa)
Lovedale, also known as the Lovedale Missionary Institute, was a mission station and educational institute in the Victoria East division of the Cape Province, South Africa (now in Eastern Cape Province). It lies above sea level on the banks of the Tyhume River, a tributary of the Keiskamma River, some north of Alice, officially Dikeni. Foundation The station was founded in 1824 by the Glasgow Missionary Society (GMS) and was named after Dr John Love, one of the leading members of, and at the time secretary to, the society. The site first chosen was in the Ncera valley, but in 1834 the mission buildings were destroyed during the 6th Frontier War. On rebuilding, the station was removed somewhat farther north to the banks of the Tyhume river. Lovedale Press
Lovedale Press is a small South African publishing company that has its origins in 1823 at the Gwali (Chumie or Tyumie) Mission, located in Tyume valley in Alice (now Dikeni) in the Eastern Cape. John Bennie, (a brilliant linguist) from the Glasgow Mission Society (GMS) was joined by John Ross in 1823, who brought the Ruthven Printing Press and printed the first Xhosa words in December 1823. The church used the press to publish works that mirrored Scottish missionary values, and develop potential through education and evangelism. History Bennie and Ross set up another mission station on the Ncera River in November 1824. This would become eventually become the Lovedale Mission. The original press was destroyed during The Frontier War (1834-5). A replacement press was set up in 1839. In 1841, the Lovedale Missionary Institute (a seminary) was opened.
