Lourdes Castro
Maria de Lourdes Bettencourt de Castro (9 December 1930 – 8 January 2022) was a Portuguese artist from Funchal, Madeira. After specializing in abstract art, in the 1960s she created collages and silk screens, seeking to capture ephemeral reality. From the 1970s, together with her partner Manuel Zimbro, she developed shadow puppets for her Shadow Theatre, gaining acclaim throughout Europe and Brazil. In 1998, together with Francisco Tropa, she created an installation for Portugal's contribution to the São Paulo Art Biennial. Biography Born on 9 December 1930 in Funchal, Lourdes Castro studied at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts. From where she never graduated due to 3 paintings rejected at the time by a teacher. Her first solo exhibition at the Clube Funchalense in 1955 presented her early works which were influenced by Fauvism. The Military Order of Saint James of the Sword (), formerly known as the Ancient, Most Noble and Enlightened Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, of the Scientific, Literary and Artistic Merit (), is one of the four former ancient Portugal, Portuguese Military order (religious society), military orders. It was formerly established in 1175 and secularized in 1789. History The Order was founded in 1172, and has its origins in the Order of Santiago, founded in the Kingdom of León in 1170, probably as an order of Augustinians, Augustinian canons regular to escort pilgrims to the shrine of St. James the Greater in Santiago de Compostela. King Ferdinand II of León soon set it to garrison the southern frontiers of León against the Almohads of al-Andalus. Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a Composition (visual arts), composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa
Marcelo Nuno Duarte Rebelo de Sousa (; born 12 December 1948) is a Portuguese politician and academic who is the president of Portugal since 2016. He is a member of the Social Democratic Party, though he suspended his party membership for the duration of his presidency. Rebelo de Sousa has previously served as a government minister, parliamentarian in the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic, legal scholar, journalist, political analyst, law professor, and pundit. Born in Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is the eldest son of Baltasar Rebelo de Sousa (1921–2001) and his wife Maria das Neves Fernandes Duarte (1921–2003). He has claimed that his mother had Jewish ancestry. He is named after Marcelo Caetano, the last prime minister of the Estado Novo regime and a friend of his father.
