Louise Boyd Dale
Louise Boyd Dale (March 30, 1913 – December 15, 1967) was a philatelist of the first rank, and the daughter of fellow philatelist Alfred F. Lichtenstein. Born in New York City, she was raised as a stamp collector from an early age in the environment of her father’s rare collections and numerous prominent philatelic friends, she herself became a highly regarded collector of stamps and a recognized figure in the field of philately. Serious philatelic research and collecting, up to the early 20th century, was generally regarded as a field for "men only" to enjoy. Louise Boyd Dale was prominent in breaking this cultural mold, and establishing women in the ranks of philately. She became a "first woman" in a number of positions previously held only by men. American Philatelic Society
The American Philatelic Society (APS) is the largest nonprofit stamp collecting foundation of philately in the world. Both the membership and interests of the society are worldwide. History The organization, originally named the ''American Philatelic Association'', was established on September 14, 1886 in New York City, and the following day elected John Kerr Tiffany as its first president. Voting membership was granted to 219 individuals who paid two bits (25¢) for the privilege. The organization's name was changed to its present name for a few months in 1897, then back, then permanently in 1908. Society membership reached over 4,000 in 1940 and included U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes. The Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP) is a Philately, philatelic award of international scale, created by the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain in 1921 to honour those who have advanced philately through research, expertise, or service. The Roll consists of five pieces of parchment to which the signatories add their names. New honorees continue to be added annually. The Lichtenstein Medal, also known as the ''Alfred F. Lichtenstein Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Philately'' is given annually to a living individual for outstanding service to philately. Origin The Lichtenstein Medal was established by the Collectors Club of New York in 1952 in honor of noted philatelist Alfred Lichtenstein (philatelist), Alfred F. Lichtenstein (1876-1947). The Lichtenstein Medal is similar in importance in philately with the Lindenberg Medal awarded by the Berliner Philatelisten-Klub of Germany for investigations and contributions to philatelic literature.
