Louis Wolfson II
Louis Wolfson II (September 19, 1927 – October 11, 1979) was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from Miami-Dade County from 1963–1973. Biography Wolfson was the son of Frances Meyer (1906–1980) and Mitchell Wolfson (1900–1983), who founded Wometco Enterprises in 1925 and was the first Jewish mayor of Miami Beach in 1943. Mitchell Wolfson
Mitchell Wolfson Sr. (1900 – January 28, 1983) was an American businessman, theatre owner, politician, and founder of Wometco Enterprises. Biography Wolfson was born in 1900 in Key West, Florida. He went to school in Key West and at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York and then graduated from Columbia University. After school, he went to work for the East Coast Wholesale Corp in Miami, founded by his father in 1884. In 1925, he partnered with his brother-in-law, Sidney Meyer, forming the Wolfson-Meyer Theater Company and began construction on a state of the art theater in downtown Miami. The Capital Theatre was completed in 1926 at the cost of $300,000 and featured an early form of air conditioning. They built the company into a business conglomerate using the portmanteau, Wometco Enterprises. In 1949, Wometco founded the first television station in Miami, WTVJ. The Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives (The Wolfson Archives) is currently housed at Miami Dade College's Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami, Florida, United States. History Wolfson Archives was named in honor of benefactors Lynn and Louis Wolfson II and was founded in 1984 primarily by philanthropist Lynn Wolfson (''née'' Rabin) (1927-2012), journalist Ralph Renick (1928-1991), and Miami historian Arva Moore Parks. It was created under the joint sponsorship of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, Miami Dade College, and the University of Miami. Originally, the Archives was housed in the basement area of the Main Branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, until it moved to its present location. The mission of the Archives is to: "collect, preserve and make accessible film and video materials made in or about Florida which reflect the history and culture of the region".
