Louis Vigée
Louis Vigée (2 February 1715 – 9 May 1767) was a French portraitist. He was also a fan painter, artist in pastels and a member of the Académie de Saint-Luc. In 1750, he married Jeanne Maissin Vigée. In 1755, Jeanne gave birth to their first child Élisabeth Louise Vigée (1755–1842), whom became a painter, and in 1758, Jeanne gave birth to their second child Étienne Vigée (1758–1820), whom became a playwright and ''man of letters''. Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun
Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (; ; 16 April 1755 – 30 March 1842), also known as Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun or simply as Madame Le Brun, was a French painter who mostly specialized in portrait painting, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her artistic style is generally considered part of the aftermath of Rococo with elements of an adopted Neoclassicism, Neoclassical style. Her subject matter and color palette can be classified as Rococo, but her style is aligned with the emergence of Neoclassicism. Vigée Le Brun created a name for herself in Ancien Régime society by serving as the portrait painter to Marie Antoinette. She enjoyed the patronage of European aristocrats, actors, and writers, and was elected to art academies in ten cities. Some famous contemporary artists, such as Joshua Reynolds, viewed her as one of the greatest portraitists of her time, comparing her with the Dutch Golden Age painting, old Dutch masters. Étienne Vigée
Louis-Jean-Baptiste-Étienne Vigée (2 December 1758 – 8 August 1820) was a French playwright and man of letters. Early life Born into an artistic family, he was the son of the pastellist Louis Vigée (1715–1767) and the brother of the painter Élisabeth Vigée. Career Vigée was popular in the salons for his pleasant personality and quick wit. He was employed as a secretary to Marie Joséphine of Savoy, the ''comtesse de Provence'', wife of future King Louis XVIII, and sister-in-law of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. He wrote poetry in praise of the French Revolution, although his enthusiasm quickly faded and he was at one point arrested as a Girondist. He lived long enough to write poetry both in praise of Napoleon and Louis XVIII following the Bourbon Restoration. Julie Le Brun
Jeanne-Julie-Louise Nigris ( Le Brun; 12 February 1780 – 8 December 1819), nicknamed "Brunette", was the daughter of Élisabeth Vigée, who was also known as Madame Le Brun, and was the model for many of her paintings. Life Julie Le Brun was born on 12 February 1780 in Paris, France, to Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Le Brun and Élisabeth Vigée, also known as Madame Le Brun. When her parents separated in 1789, Julie traveled with her mother. Early in life she produced a number of pastels, including one after a piece by Jakob Orth; in her memoirs the elder painter refers to (her happy disposition for painting). Relations with her mother were strained from time to time, especially after her marriage to Gaëtan Bernard Nigris in 1799. The couple soon separated. Académie De Saint-Luc
The Académie de Saint-Luc (; ) was a guild of painters and sculptors set up in Paris in 1391, and dissolved in 1776. It was created by the Provost of Paris, along the lines of the Guilds of Saint Luke in other parts of Europe. In 1648, a group of artists with royal patronage, led by Charles Le Brun, successfully persuaded the court of King Louis XIV to support the creation of the ''Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture'', an art institution with different membership criteria that became a rival to the ''Académie de Saint-Luc''. The ''Académie de Saint-Luc'' remained successful in subsequent years by attracting the artists who did not have access to the ''Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture''. This was particularly the case for women artists.
