Louis Rosenhead
Louis Rosenhead CBE (1 January 1906 – 10 November 1984) was a British mathematician noted for his work on fluid mechanics, and was head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at Liverpool University from 1933 to 1973. Life Rosenhead was born in Mabgate, Leeds, on 1 January 1906 to parents from Poland, the first of three children. J. T. Fluid mechanics is the branch of physics concerned with the mechanics of fluids (liquids, gases, and plasmas) and the forces on them. It has applications in a wide range of disciplines, including mechanical, aerospace, civil, chemical and biomedical engineering, geophysics, oceanography, meteorology, astrophysics, and biology. It can be divided into fluid statics, the study of fluids at rest; and fluid dynamics, the study of the effect of forces on fluid motion. It is a branch of continuum mechanics, a subject which models matter without using the information that it is made out of atoms; that is, it models matter from a ''macroscopic'' viewpoint rather than from ''microscopic''. Herbert Brian Squire
Herbert Brian Squire FRS (13 July 1909 – 22 November 1961), was a British aerospace engineer and Zaharoff Professor of Aviation at Imperial College London. Biography Born on 13 July 1909, Squire was educated at Bedford School and at Balliol College, Oxford, where he read mathematics. After research at the University of Oxford, and at the University of Göttingen between 1932 and 1933, he became a scientific officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In 1946 he was appointed as chairman of the Helicopter Committee of the Aeronautics Research Council and, in 1947, he was appointed as principal scientific officer at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, working on jet propulsion. In physics, a fluid is a liquid, gas, or other material that continuously deforms (''flows'') under an applied shear stress, or external force. They have zero shear modulus, or, in simpler terms, are substances which cannot resist any shear force applied to them. Although the term ''fluid'' generally includes both the liquid and gas phases, its definition varies among branches of science. Definitions of ''solid'' vary as well, and depending on field, some substances can be both fluid and solid. Viscoelastic fluids like Silly Putty appear to behave similar to a solid when a sudden force is applied. Maurice Bartlett
Maurice Stevenson Bartlett FRS (18 June 1910 – 8 January 2002) was an English statistician who made particular contributions to the analysis of data with spatial and temporal patterns. He is also known for his work in the theory of statistical inference and in multivariate analysis. Biography Born in London, Bartlett was raised in a poor family but won a scholarship to Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, where he was inspired to the study of statistics by a chapter in Hall and Knight's ''Algebra''. In 1929, he won a scholarship to Queens' College, Cambridge where he read mathematics, graduating with the rank of wrangler. He attended lectures on statistics by John Wishart, on relativity by Arthur Eddington and on quantum mechanics by Paul Dirac. Robin Plackett
Robin L. Plackett (3 September 1920 – 23 June 2009) was a statistician best known for his contributions to the history of statistics and to experimental design, most notably the Plackett–Burman designs. Early life and education Plackett attended Liverpool Collegiate School from 1932 to 1939. He then attended Clare College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1942. Early career During World War II, Plackett was requested to work for the Ministry of Supply, in SR17 which was a statistical branch. He began to develop a methodology for applying statistical knowledge, and would pass it down to new recruits. First scientific paper In 1946, he would publish his first paper which was written jointly with Peter Burman in an journal called ''Biometrika''.
